Wicked Lasers Builds a Laser Viewable from Space
Here's the deal, you shouldn't ever look at a laser beam head on, especially one built by Wicked Lasers. It's all fun and games until someone goes blind, and that's exactly what will happen if you try and stare directly at the 1W laser dot in the company's new Spyder 3 Krypton. Wicked Lasers says the device is under review by the Guinness World records as the world's brightest handheld laser in the world, and considering it can be seen from space, we have a feeling it will be a short review.
That's right, the S3 Krypton is the first laser visible from outer space with an intergalactic range of 85 miles. That's if you opt for the 1000mW version, though if you don't want to anger any low flying space creatures, it's also available in 300mW and 500mW intensities.
According to Wicked Lasers, the top-end 1000mW model is rated at 86 million lux and appears 8,000 times brighter than if you were to look directly at the sun. As Wicked Lasers says, "Safety goggles are a must."
Certain safety mechanisms are built in, such as a TeslaCool Thermostatic Regulation, which is a fancy pants way of saying it knows when it's overheating and will drop the current down to stabilize temps. The green laser is housed in an aircraft grade aluminum chassis, and comes with SmartSwitch technology to lock out other users from wielding the device.
The 1000mW version runs $1,000, while the 500mW and 300mW run $500 and $300, respectively.
We had a chance to play with and review Wicked Lasers' Spyder III Arctic, which you can view here (photos) and here (review).

85 miles isn't space range! That'd be pathetic for an intergalactic weapon... Our moon is over two hundred thousand miles away from us, and it's still freaking orbiting!
That being said, I pity the companies who are bound to lose communications satellites and weather balloons from this toy. (Airspace object location? There's an app for that! Targeting systems? Well, I mean, I suppose you could use it for one... Why?) Cheap mobile technology + 1W lasers with 85 mile range = civilian armament (without gov't regulation!!)

Bullcrap. There's no way this laser can damage anything half a mile away, much less 85 miles away.

What is the purpose of this? Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but what would you do with it?

Astronaut : "Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here."
Houston : "This is Houston. Say again please."
Astronaut : "Houston, we've had a problem. We're under attack. Tranquility has just exploded. It was some kind of laser weapon. It punched a hole right through it. I've never seen anything like it."
Houston : "We're sending backup. Bruce Willis should be there within 24 hours. Hang in there. Houston out."
