What Will Happen to Vista after Microsoft Launches Windows 7?

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Everyone seems excited about the upcoming launch of Windows 7, and with good reason. By many accounts -- speed being the primary one -- Windows 7 is what Vista should have been all along. So where, then, does that leave Vista once Windows 7 starts shipping?

"We are still not sure if [computer makers] will be able to ship Vista once Windows 7 is made available," said Richard Francis, general manager and Windows client business group lead at Microsoft Asia-Pacific. "Having said that, an enterprise customer that purchases a PC with Windows 7 pre-installed is allowed to downgrade to Vista should they desire, similar to what we have today on Vista to XP."

Francis went on to reiterate that Microsoft will stop support for Vista in April 2012. And it's probably a safe bet that Vista won't see anywhere near the same user outcry that XP saw, which helped the OS avoid a stay of execution more than once. After stumbling out of the gates with performance hampering bugs, most are looking forward to moving on.

"It's been a long time since we've had a version of Windows that will actually run better [than a previous version] on the hardware that most customers have," Mike Nash, corporate vice president of the Windows product management group at Microsoft, told reporters during a conference call.

Windows 7 recently went into Release Candidate (RC) form and will be available to the general public for download tomorrow, May 5th.

I do know what windows 7 works , but one thing I am very ckear is that the vista is really give me a bad impression, that when I bought a new laptop with vista , it really give me a big trouble to setup other applications , so I have to restall the OS with XP , vista is too ugly !

avataranyone notice?

Anyone notice that vista was like the original Phenom. both didnt have great starts (TLB bug-poor yields+performance vs competition ect. -Phenom / /  driver issues Poor performance even on high end systems poor stability ect. - Vista) but Windows 7 is like the Phenom 2. What the original SHOULD have been. Awesome performance vs previous version.  Phenom 2 has good yields great performance and best of all overclocks like nobodies business.  Windows 7 is stable (even in beta) has alot better performance and much lower system overhead. If only they could have done Phenom 2 and Windows 7 instead of Vista and Phenom. but obviously that wouldnt have worked.

Will Smith posted this to Twitter and then I replied because of the confusion.

avatarVista officially disowned

"... Microsoft will stop support for Vista in April 2012."

Yet support for XP will stop in April 2014!

Finally: M$ admits that Vista was nothing more than a boxed beta.

bingojubes, i believe the score goes up to 7.9/8ish. at least the build 7000 was this way.

avatarRC1 build 7100 goes to 7.9

RC1 build 7100 goes to 7.9 for the performance score but really it just gives you an idea of your computers performance. I have exactly zero 7.9 scores.

My current scores from a clean install are as follows.

Processor Calculations Per Sec 6.5                          An Penryn Core2Duo E8400 @3ghz

Memory (RAM)                       6.5                         8gigs of DDR2 800mhz 5*5*5*CL12

Graphics                                6.4                         And I've got an EVGA Gforce GTX280

Gaming Grahpics                    6.4                         Again puzzeling that a GTX280 does not get a max score.

Primary Hard Disk                  5.9                          1x 500Gig Seagate 7200.11 and 1x 1.5Tb Seagate 7200.11 with no problems so take that Seagate Baracuda haters.

Too bad there is no average score and MS decided to go with the lowest score for an overall score. Wouldn't you get pissed off if you ran an hour long Benchmark just to have it do that to you?

avatarLet's see here.. My 500gig

Let's see here.. My 500gig drive is a 1.5 years old and my 1.5Tb drive is now 5months old. I think if something were going to happen it would have happened already because the issue was not hardware it was a bad firmware. The Firmware issue would have come up by now.  And so very few people actually had the firmware problem. Most people that had problems were those that were unaffected but still tried to update their firmware and ended up bricking their hard drives because the firmware update had a flaw in it or was for a different drive then what was being patched or was a bad firmware update flash attempt. I had to have a rom chip overnighted to me for my Mobo because of a bad flash.

Why don't people still hate on Maxtor or Western Digital for pretty much selling stupid bad HDD's? Remember Maxtors Deskstar drives when they were an IBM product?

You mean the Deskstars that are now made by Hitachi, right?

avatarI'm sorry your right

I'm sorry your right Hitachi.. The Deathstar. I had one die on me and I tore it apart. The fluid dynamic bearing had broken and the actuator actually hit the spindle and physically damaged the spindle surface. That drive did last me almost a year before it died.

avatarWhat they SHOULD do is

Give a free copy of Windows 7 to anyone with a legal copy of Vista.  That might go some way toward repairing the damage to Microsoft's reputation.

avatarWould be Good

At least a functioning trial or something of that sort.  They do need to make money.

avatarWindows 7 is the Best

Windows 7 is the Best Windows yet. And it is way fast. I love it and if I could marry it I would. There simply is no excuse to not try it out. It's freaking fast and great in every way.

avatarWell if it's so good..

...can it play any games ??

avatarIt plays nice with all my

It plays nice with all my games and yes Crisis runs slightly faster in Win7 compared to Vista. GTAIV, Company of Heroes, Left4Dead and everything else plays great.

This is a fully functional evaluation. It's good until March 2010. You'll upgrade your computer befor then.

Vista works fine for me, wasn't until after SP1 that I finally actually used it. I'll eventually upgrade to 7 once it's released. For now I'd rather just use Vista instead of a beta or an RC that'll eventually expire. Have Vista on my desktop and laptop, XP on the netbook.

avatarWindows 7 RC1 Build 7100

Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100 64bit kicks ass. Your old Beta key will work as it did for me and activated just fine. I got my copy through bittorrent. There should'nt be a problem as I have the Beta and a registered Beta Key. Do as I did and do a clean install. No more Vista for me.

I typed WinVer at the Start Menu and an Expiration of 3/1/2010 at 4:59PM is listed. So this is great. Microsoft is giving me time to save up my pennies to get the best version available after the release.

Microsoft thank you for the very liberal Evaluation Period.
