Warhammer Online’s Endless Trial Begins

Warhammer Online’s making an offer you can’t refuse. And that’s not because you’ll be sleeping with either a) the fishes or b) a horse head if you turn it down. (At least, we don’t think so…) No, the offer’s allure stems from the fact that it’s completely free! And unending! How can you say “no” to that?
Ok, so there is a bit of a catch. While Warhammer Online’s free trial may have done away with that “10 days” nonsense, your character still goes back on the shelf once he/she reaches level ten. Also – presumably to prevent spam accounts – sending mail and selling items on the auction house is prohibited.
On the bright side, though, most of the game is streamed after you’ve bitten off an initial 1 GB chunk of data, so getting up and running is quick and simple. Almost as quick and simple as upgrading to a paid account!
Yeah, Mythic, was that good? Did we sell it well enough? Sure, we take check—Hey! Is that microphone still on?!

While I'll admit there were some things that took a little getting used to (really comparing a game just off the shelf to WoW in its prime, heading well towards its twilight is a poor comparison... the market now is begging for something new in a much bigger way than they were around the time of WAR's initial release.. WoW exhaustion is becoming common. I'd say that is why you see ppl like DDO, WAR and Age of Conan doing some clever trial account experiments to draw off those who are no longer MMO noobs but who miss the well developed social scene of their WoW guild and server... and each will start taking larger chunks in the years to come. WAR is one of a few who is set to play that field)
I can't agree more: WARs shining point is definately its pvp combat, which is much improved (in addition to the UI, performance.. just about everything that made it a tough sell a few months after launch and drove many away from it). The large player base from games like WoW who were BG addicts but who at this point are ready to vomit at the thought of another round of WSG, Arathi Basin, Alterac Valley will quickly feel at home with already well established and smoothly working guilds, fun combat, etc.
I stopped playing around the same time many did, and reluctantly went back to WoW a few months after WoTLK... somewhat distressed that i couldnt find much that held my interest like WoW did. Now that myself and many others (imo at least) feel like WoW has become an game endlessly doomed to re-walk its own footsteps with nothing more to add to itself than ever increasing stats, a few new profs, etc. where epic has become the "norm" and level 20 players are riding mounts, the attention of WoW has shifted in such a way as will inevitably cause it to lose all but new first timers, and the very most hard core. It is into that niche that WAR would love to take a cut at again.
I can say, coming back, the way things look, perform, the class skills, BGs and pvp of the game are so much fun now (possibly helped by player consolidation onto fewer servers); adjustments made to many things in general, I am having a blast. It feels like vanilla wow BGs and pvp with BC guilds and community. If you're looking to quest and solo, may not be your game, but worth a shot. If youre looking to pvp in huge numbers and have easy fun access to numerous world and BG battles and fun, you really have got to give WAR another look. After dusting off my Bright Wizard and the wife her old Witch Hunter we are truly having times like we havent had for a few years in an MMO again.

Unfortunate. I was so excited when the game came out, only to be greatly disappointed. Terrible performance, glitches, graphics, etc. The gameplay is a great idea, but I could never get past the horrible performance and lack of advanced graphic settings. I do use a high end machine and expect MUCH more from game developers. Sad, cuz I really wanted this one to work. This only sounds like the end, which was destined the day it released.

I tried the demo. It was the most horrid thing i had ever played. The gamplay, the mechanics, the combat, the sound, and the graphics all sucked.

They have made quite a large amount of changes in the past patch. The entire newbie zone has been revamped to be more streamlined. Sure the first levels are kill this, give me that, sort of quests, but the RvR is fast and fun- especially at lower levels. They also have fixed a client/server bug that was sometimes causing some lag and delay between from when you fire an attack and the attack actually being performed. The engineers also somehow goosed up FPS quite a bit. I used to typically just get around 40 fps, but after the patch I've been seeing a lot more 50s and even 60-70s in some scenario fights.
I've played a lot of MMOs, WAR isn't the very best of them but it sure is one hell of a contender I think. It certainly has some of the best "Pick up and play" PvP options when it comes to MMOs out there though. Give it a shot- not like you're going to have to pony up anything for it. :3

Similar thing happened with Dungeons & Dragons Online and it was a good move for them.
Is Warhammer still doing alright? I played it around when it first came out hoping for a WoW killer like everyone else. I enjoyed it, not really sure why I left.

WAR is doing fairly well. It isn't the biggest MMO out there and this has its pros and cons. The best thing about WAR though is that there are quite a number of guilds that are just really good coordinators and the game has a great community- in all tiers! WAR has potential and has been getting vastly better with each of these recent patches- and its not like "Oh they fixed something annoying". They are taking things and improving them in ways you didn't think you would have thought of, like UI additions and improvements when nobody was complaining before.
I dunno, just small things like that, it just shows how detail oriented the devs are and how much they try to make their game even better than it is. :)

It may be touted as an endless trial but it really is the first 10 levels of the game and actually there is quite a lot to enjoy in Tier 1 (level 1 - ~12). I think people will be delighted when they do their first public quest or scenario.
