WarGames Movie Celebrates 25th Anniversary by Coming Back to Theaters
Posted 07/23/08 at 04:25:25 PM by Paul Lilly
It's not often you get to atone for a mistake you made 25 years ago, so when the opportunity arises, you better take it. With that in mind, in case you missed it the first time around here's your chance to catch the cult classic WarGames, starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, in a movie theater a quarter of a century after it came out. And even if you did already watch it on a big screen before wearing out your VHS copy years later, how can any geek pass up an opportunity to experience a flick that, at the time of its debut, was far ahead of its time? As for you new generation of PC users, consider this required viewing.
The theatrical re-release, which plays on July 24th, 2008 (that's tomorrow!) at 7:30 p.m., will also show a preview of WarGames: The Dead Code, a direct-to-DVD sequel being made available on July 29.
Anyone have plans to watch the original?

Seeing Wargames in the theater would be an awsome birthday present (old enough to remember the vhs version). But the 3 major theaters in the area are trying to rake in all the money from the new batman film and walle. I'd have to drive to Minneapolis to see it. Oh well.

They made thousands of prints for one screening across the country? A single screening?

Yes this was a classic movie , even in repeats during the 80's and 90's, John Badham was the director most all of john badham's movies are technicaly brilliant , he directed Blue Thunder ,which in 1983 was far ahead of its time some of the concepts in that film are just now bieng adopted by the military.
Wargames was built around the infant Tech and PC enthusiasts ,and it can be seen in some of the gear broderick has stacked around him , take note of the acoustic modem!.
Sneakers was another badham movie that has very realistic tech on display fans of Wargames should also go rent Sneakers. with robert redford.
worth it?

i didn't see the old movie, but i saw the new movie, its pretty good, but i don't get it. Is it a sequel? the computer they use against ripley is really old, its command line based, no gui. I don't see how a twenty year old computer, and beat a modern day supercomputer.
great!

War Games is a definite must-see geek film classic. I had the "would you like to play a game" soundbite as my windows startup sound on one of my other rigs for the longest time :)
I suggest bonus old-skool cred points for whoever can correctly identify the computer in the background of that picture from the film

I just bought tickets to the Daly City Century 20 theater. I've never seen this in theaters before, and can't wait to see it.
Anyone who's in the Bay Area and wants to come is welcome!

If I still lived in Auburn I would make the drive. But Wisconsin is a bit far just to hang for an evening, no matter what the movie is. I havent seen it in years and wouldnt mind seeing it again for ol' time geek sake.

I wish I was there! Instead, I'm visiting family in West Virginia until Monday and upon looking up tickets, I just received the sad, sad news that WarGames isn't playing anywhere in the entire state. I can't recall the last time I've been this bummed.

A true classic! I saw it twice at the theater (yes, I am old). Maybe I will go back for the nostalgia.
