First, it was Firefox, then it was Chrome, and now it is VLC. Another fantastic open source software title is making it easy for developers to enhance an already fully featured application.
At the moment, VLC extension support is limited to the nightly builds, so there currently is not a “stable build,” and subsequently there aren’t many extensions to download (one, in fact). The extensions use a lightweight scripting language known as Lua, which is embedded inside the media player. Extensions can range in functionality from getting lyrics and finding subtitles, to getting the latest concert information for an artist.
To get started using extensions, download the latest VLC nightly build. Then follow the instructions here on how to install the extensions you can find here.

Lua is a VERY VERY nice scripting language. I've had lots of experience with it myself. It's used in the (hellhole, STAY AWAYYY) game robl0x, the slightly less hellish WoW, and the awesome Gmod.

I downloaded the program last week; it came with a few unwanted features, such as a program that switched webpages after a few seconds to paid sites and a addin for Firefox that sat on my task bar and linked to a paid download site. I was able to remove them with Control Panel/Remove programs after searching for them, but what a pain! I downloaded from the VLC website.
