Virgin America First Airline to Offer Wi-Fi in All Flights

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

While AirTran claimed that they would be the first to implement Wi-Fi on all of their flights, Virgin America just beat them to the punch.

Yesterday Virgin officially announced that they would feature Wi-Fi on all 100 of their daily flights. Costs clock in at $12.95 for three hours and over, $9.95 for less than three hours, $5.95 for red-eye flights, and $7.95 if you just want to use a handheld device (such as a cell phone or a DSi).

Sure, the prices might seem a little beefy, but when I’m given the mental option between watching the inevitably bad movie that’s playing on the screen in front of me, or surfing the net on my own accord, I’ll opt towards the latter every time.

I can't wait until companies like Westjet and Air Canada start doing this, it'll make all of those really long flights much easier!

avatarI was on a cross country

I was on a cross country flight on Virgin America recently (so more than 5 hours).   The WiFi was fairly quick for browsing, YouTube, and IM. But I don't know how many other people were using it on the plane.  I imagine it could be saturated if everyone was using it.

In terms of entertainment on the plane, there were no free movies.  They were all 8 bucks each.  So a few bucks more to feed the internet addiction vs a 2 hour movie for 8 bucks.  I thought it was worthwhile.   You could watch the DirectTV feeds for regular TV shows for free, but it really depends on if anything was on at the time you were flying.

avatarIt's hard to think of $13

It's hard to think of $13 being a beefy charge when the airlines are already screwing you out of so much more.

avatarNot all that big of a deal

Not all that big of a deal when you compare them to all the other airlines installing wifi on their aircraft.  Virgin is a small player with only 30 planes.  So, of course it's going to take other airlines like Southwest and Alaska a little longer.  From what I have seen, the technology Virgin is using is inferior.

Do they have a ban on VOIP usage?  I hope so!

Imagine somebody sitting next to you on a 10 hour flight yapping away on skype.
