Uh... why don't people donate like this for say... a child dying of a curable disease or disability?

I'd be impressed if she took a small sum to go on vacation and donated the rest to a legit charity.

IMO most of those donations were guilt payments for all the times people sat by and let someone else be tormented.

Strhopper

I think some people need to look at this with in context!

Was it terrible and mean? YES

But some of the comments on here are just as mean and are directed towards KIDS!!!

You can say what ever you would like but the facts remains she is an adult and these are kids. What they did is wrong and they should be punished. But some of the silly threats people are making and wishing on these kids are crazy.

I know when I was a teenager I did some dumb sh*t, sh$t I am completely ashamed of. but guess what I grew up! If you some how went your whole teenage life without making any stupid mistakes good for ya. But the majority take some time to grow up.

I think its sad, when something happens like this, people think throwing money on the problem will solve it. I wouldn't be surprise a lot of fake stuff will happen, hoping for a similar response.

avatar

BrandNewJesus

WOW...up to about 580,000!
Thats great and all, but a part of me is saying enough already. Shes good. People of the internet, move on, hopefully to helping someone else in need.

avatar

John Pombrio

Does Karen have to pay tax on this?

avatar

kiaghi7

Sadly, I do believe it would fall under one of two categories...

First, even if it's a gift, or even charitable donation, it's actually not entirely exempt from taxation... You can only "give" but so much to an individual before it's considered "income"... And in a way I kind of understand that so called reasoning... but it's still somewhat sad that the goodness of the gesture will be diminished by the tax-man.

Second, it could well fall under a "windfall" clause, such as winning the lottery. In which case it's taxed even more oppressively, possibly in excess of 50%-55% of it could actually be taken by big brother, because of course they know how to spend it SOOOOOOO much better...

Indeed the tax man cometh, and the tax man taketh away...

avatar

Carlidan

That is a really good question. If I had to guess... yes.

Did they really think they could stay anonymous?

None of us should condone vigilantism. You just crossed the line, bro.

avatar

Carlidan

Have to agree with szore. And that's very rare.

avatar

szore

gee, thanks...

avatar

BrandNewJesus

Ahh come on, they deserve a few bags of flaming shit on their door step.

avatar

Strhopper

I don't think so, they are kids! yeah they made a mistake and were assholes, but cmon they are kids.

I agree that this was terrible but some people are blowing this out of proportion. Again they are just kids!!!

avatar

crc32

To the parents of these four kids. You should beat your children to with-in an inch of the end of their life's. First of all for dis-respecting an adult.

Then they should have to publicly apologize to Mrs Klein, to the City of Greece and to there school. They should have to verbally acknowledge how scummy there actions were. Youtube videos of their apologies should be linked to the original video.

And Weezer should make a video and song about it.

avatar

Strhopper

Really? to with-in an inch of their lives???? Cmon people they are kids!!!

Yes we should all be upset and they should face some sort of punishment but really??

I was kinda of happy when this story broke and there was this out pouring of love but some people are just as bad as these kids.

Some of the things you guys say

vkt62

Wow. the fund has crossed $44000.

This woman has got 'rob me' written all over her...

Here is a new wrinkle. Apparently Karen did not have her hearing aid turned up so she missed most of the taunts that the cellphone unfortunately DID pick up. She heard enough to bring her to tears tho, poor woman.
http://old.post-gazette.com/pg/12174/1241273-153.stm

avatar

Dorito Bandit

Fortunately, the cellphone did pick up those taunts! Not *unfortunately*, John. :)

All the kids involved should have to appear in an anti- bullying ad for Youtube! and any other video hosting site where fools upload their idiotic behavior. The consequences of their actions need to be shown! That is, if legal punishment is handed down to them.

Glad to see MOST everyone here has a heart-felt compassion for this lady. Unlike that one idiot named Hilarity. Wonder how he'd feel if this was him or someone he loved? Some people are just awful and shouldn't pass their genes on!!!

avatar

John Pombrio

Another wrinkle that came out was that the taunting was staged. The kid with the cellphone was peer pressured to record the whole thing so that the guys acting out could get it all recorded, I guess as a trophy? Even Karen said that this was way beyond normal activity for these kids. Acting for the camera, egging each other on.

avatar

szore

And if they ganged raped someone 'just to film it' that would lessen the crime?

avatar

Carlidan

Don't think he saying that.

avatar

Suijen

I always assumed that bullies really were just playing around and didn't actually mean to hurt anyone. After seeing a person cry, wouldn't that tell you that you've gone too far?

avatar

Hilarity

Hilarious. They should have beaten the wrinkled old cunt. I am proudly amoral and no I'm not trolling.

avatar

szore

I see punks like you here in Brooklyn all the time: Love to fight, when it's 9 against 1.

avatar

alex_dh9

"I'm not trolling." haha, right. I hope your "proudly amoral" ass get's stomped out one of these days.

avatar

skirge01

Read his other 19 posts and it's clear he's trolling in every reply he's made. Linux sucks, AMD sucks, consoles suck, etc...

As they say, don't feed the trolls. We need a way to obliterate these kind of posts (as well as spam) so they can be avoided.

avatar

livebriand

Is our society that stupid? Really?

avatar

chop_slap

Ummmm, yes it it. Have to ever been to North America? Most kids are purposefuly raised to be without morals. Are you really that surprised?? Really?

avatar

Engelsstaub

...but this sort of behavior isn't confined to kids in North America. One can observe it in Australia, the UK, and nearly every other western-type nation.

avatar

vrmlbasic

So the non-"Western" nations are somehow above this, that non-"Western" children are morally superior, is that what you're saying? I hope not, but I ask as the implication is there.

avatar

Engelsstaub

No, not really. I'm just not speaking to the other cultures as I'm less aware/more ignorant of them. My reply was meant to convey that this isn't just some "fat stupid yank" problem.

On another note: I misbehaved frequently on the bus as a child. My dad beat my ass for it when he heard about it...but I still continued because I was a punk and a class clown and enjoyed the rewards of peer-laughter in the absence of my parents. Everyone wants to blame parents as though kids won't just do what they want when they're not around and are not at all influenced by anything else.

Fast-forward to today where the internet unites trolls and jerks across national borders without ever having to look a person in the face when mouthing off.

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Politicians and the media love to delude the public into believe what is really wrong with education today are lazy, overpaid teachers; unions; and a lack of competition--as if education was a business with an applicable return & investment formula.

THIS is what is wrong with education in America.

THIS is what is wrong with America.

It's called social decay.

And no teacher on earth can fix it.

This is why I tell my students not to go into teaching.

avatar

warptek2010

No dude. Social decay is the result you get from our fucked up educational system. This is a case of you get what you pay (through the nose)for i.e. someone else pays for public education and the person that's supposed to benefit sometimes doesn't give a shit as opposed to private education where the someone who pays for it is the someone that better show up on time and learn cause it's on the parents dime.

avatar

Carlidan

You know that public schools are funded by taxes right? So therefore you are STILL paying for your kids education.

avatar

Ry03

Ok, I officially hate my generation, I mean, I never really thought it was that hard to be nice, just goes to show what society has devolved into. However, I am proud of those that did donate money for her. That just goes to show the power of good or bad parenting

avatar

Baer

This is what happens when you give trophys to loosers to make them feel "special"
These kids need to pay a big enough price so that they never forget what assholes they were.

avatar

kiaghi7

One can only hope that the miserable miscreants tormenting the lady in the video are permanently banned from the bus and their parents that let their children become such miserable reflections of their "parenting" will then have to carry their hoodlum(s) back and forth to school.

The outpouring of support, and indeed the money, gives me faith in the greater good of society... Hopefully the proceeds will all go to the lady as either tax exempt or minimally taxed so that the greatest portion of the good will expressed is given to the deserving lady who shouldn't have had to endure what those brats did.

If she gets enough, maybe she can put it away as a savings nest-egg and perhaps draw enough interest on it so that she never has to put up with kids like the punks in the video ever again!

avatar

nbrowser

+1 and many many more, just disturbing to see kids of this age doing this, welcome to the silver spoon generation, where you can (well not really since one of the morons posted this video) get away with this kind of abuse.

Kids need to learn to respect their elders, pure and simple. I see the disrespect every day and to be quite honest, I find it to be actually disgusting.

avatar

bling581

It's debatable if it's worse now than it was 10-20 years ago, but the fact is that with things like the internet it's much more noticeable. It still happened back when I was a kid, but you didn't usually hear about it if the news didn't cover it. It's nothing new people, you just hear about it now.

avatar

vkt62

Well Put. Its not just the kids. The tv was much better when I was growing up 10 years ago but now you have such useless shows that it shouldn't be a surprising that kids are the way they are. Cartoon show, discovery channel, mtv were all better before the advent of reality tv and new material they show.

avatar

nyjets011269

Couldn't have said it any better.

avatar

zaphodbeeblebrox 42

my generation embarrasses me so much... well kinda i just graduated but u get the idea.

avatar

John Pombrio

Nah, this has been going on for a LONG time. I am 60 and I remember being in high school and having a class of "C" students make a male teacher flee the room in tears after having told him he smelled really bad and couldn't teach worth a damn. I was amazed that the teacher would take that stuff so personally and not bring the wrath of GOD onto their heads. The kids were just being the way kids are sometimes, like sharks in the water, they can smell vulnerabilities. You let them gang up on you and it's "Lord of the Flies" time...
Oh yeah, my high school was in upstate NY farm country, heh.

avatar

Strhopper

Don't worry its not just your generation. It was like this when I was in school.

The only difference was we didn't pick on adults like this. Just each other. But really every generation has some dumb a$$'s. But all are to blame.

I know there was a few times I saw things of this nature happen and I would just act as if it wasn't happening. One of the other kids on that bus should have stepped in and helped. But as a kid you always fear they will turn on you if you do.

But what really shocks me about this is all the attention its getting. Are people really blind and don't realize kids are mean, and act this way?

avatar

mortalrage

I dont' blame the parent, I blame society. I didn't learn bad things from my parents, I learn the bad things from friends, and culture around me...How many people kept things from there parents when growing up? If you did, that means your parents wouldn't approve of your behavior, and probably couldn't do anything anyways....

avatar

Ghok

...the same society that donated all that money to this woman?

Most of us go about our lives just fine without insulting old ladies, and we all belong to the same society.

Children learn how to behave as a result of their parents. They learn about the "bad things" later on, sure, but if they get involved in them just out of LEARNING about them, you can't just blanket blame society. Something is seriously fucked up with the kid.

Don't much feel like writing an essay on psychology right now, so I'll leave it at that.

avatar

mortalrage

Do you know these kids? or there parents? I think not, your so-called knowledge is your stumbling block...

avatar

captainjack

Do you know society? Do you know the society those kids grew up in? I think not, your so-called knowledge is your stumbling block..
