VideoLAN Releases VLC 1.0.0, Now Plays Everything
The VLC media player was initially only the choice of the quintessential geek who doesn’t take no for an answer and “codec not found” for an error. However, it has now become one of the most popular media players around the world as nearly everyone wants to play almost everything. More than eight years after it first reared its dogged head, VideoLan has released VLC 1.0.0 aka Goldeneye. Goldeneye comes stuffed to the hilt with all new features, including live recording, instant pausing, frame-by-frame playback, new HD codecs, zipped file playback and a lot more.

I tried the PC version and love the improvments over 0.9.9, but does anyone know when they will release the linux version?

All formats? Am I the only one who can't get it to play blu? I've tried the discs, and I've tried .iso files of the some discs, and nothing happens. I assume there's a way, since it's compatble with the HD audio formats. Anyone have a workaround? I checked the hep, but the wiki and forums are down.

VLC is garbage as a primary media player. Only thing I use it for is to view files I'm currently downloading. Hell, WMP isn't even that bad when paired with CCCP.

It's not perfect, I've run across stuff that wouldn't play in VLC that played fine in MPC.

WMP? Windows Media Player? It can't play anything... unless you mod your Windows install with codecs...
Media Player Classic? GOM? mis-typed WPM?
Yes, the beta/rc of VLC were in constant flux and often had regressions - but so far the current 1 version is running well and has many of the features I use MPC for.

For Windows:
http://www.cccp-project.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_Community_Codec_Pack
For Linux:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xine
If you're still having problems with playback (on Windows), I recommend this guide:
http://nunnally.ahmygoddess.net/watching-h264-videos-using-dxva/
My auxiliary PC is fairly old and couldn't playback files without skipping and losing audio + subtitle sync (with Windows XP & CCCP's package). I use Linux Mint (www.linuxmint.com) on it now with gXine. The underpowered PC can finally playback h.264 video correctly. Two thumbs up!

not reading the article, or replies, and not checking for yourself leads to wild gyrations with the keyboard.
apparently VLC performs - WMP can't play anything on its own, don't bring it up for comparison - no need to denounce VLC.
monkey's cousins also make ridiculous claims

actually i was comparing VLC and WMPwithout any mods, and clearly said both need extra codecs to play everything. but WMP isnt comalining they can "play everything" like VLC is...
