Verizon Readies Change for Pricing Structure
A leak of new training materials today have indicated that Verizon Wireless will be making some changes to its plans starting January 18th. First off, Verizon is getting rid of the all-inclusive Premium Plan. Big Red is also dropping the prices of their unlimited plans by 30%. This actually places the cost for unlimited minutes below that of AT&T.
Verizon is making some changes to their data plans as well. The carrier is going to offer a new 25MB data package for $9.99 per month, but the full $29.99 data plan is still required for smartphones. The new cheaper data plan is geared toward so-called “Multimedia Phones”, which will now require customers to purchase this plan. This seems to be a category Verizon has just made up, and includes handsets like the Chocolate Touch, the enV3, Moto Entice, and Nokia Twist among others.
While we’re happy to see the big price drop in unlimited plans, the new required data plans for some feature phones is disappointing. Do you think it’s reasonable?

I'm with sprint and as a courtesy to ALL existing family plan users, they GAVE us....GAVE us free unlimited mobile to mobile to any carrier (either outgoing or incomming) instead of just to new subscribers. I pay 189.26 a month for 4 lines (shared), 1500 anytime, unlimited night/weekends, unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited data, AAA on all 4 phones, and insurance on 2. AT&T nor Verizon can even compare to that. Oh and, I get a new phone every 12 months instead of 24.....

I guess VZW thinks customers wouldn't want an unlimited data plan...either that, or they know they've got way too many customers who'd be more than happy to bring their network to its knees.
The $10/month 25MB data plan is actually a good deal for those of us who do lightweight data streaming (i.e. email, a few online websites, etc.). Currently, you'd have to pay $40/month for a bandwidth cap that you won't come close to hitting, or pay $2 per MB which only gets you 5MB for the same price. Although, I do think they need to increase the cap to at least 100MB for $10/month - especially since you'll be paying for the bandwidth, even when you don't use it.

I was bitten by this new policy when last month when I upgraded my four year old handset to a new EnvTouch. Was incredibly irritated when I found that all of their phones with keyboards where now in this magical new class of media phones and required the $10 data plan upgrade. Then to add insult to injury, when I queried Verizon about the new requirements, they informed me that it was for my own protection since many people with these media capable phones had incurred substantial financial liability due to data usage and not understanding their plans properly. In short, now we are paying for other people's ignorance.
Sounded like a song and dance to me but they’re still getting ten bucks a month extra so I don’t think they really care if I liked the answer or not…

seems wireless carriers are all kind of uniting in screwing us over. we shouldnt have to pay for crap we dont want to use. you know, i wonder if buying an unlocked or a phone from like letstalk.com can bypass this. i got my wife a new bold from letstalk.com and she aint paying for no dataplan and i got it a few months ago.

and why you would want a data plan with it is beyond me. It's a great text phone, but it is absolutely unusable as a multimedia phone. Why I would have to pay $10 for services I would never be able to take advantage of I have no idea.

Its ridiculous that these carriers charge so much. Its very expensive to own a cell phone or really a smartphone. I stay away from them because I cannot afford to pay another $30/mo for data plan. I already pay $82 for a family plan. Mind you I have no internet access or unlimited text or multi-media access. They are greedy like cable companies. Always increasing fees. Yet they make billions.
