Gabe Newell insists all green-lit projects are still a go.Something strange is going on at Valve, and nobody seems to have any concrete answers. For the first time, the employee-friendly company issued a number of layoffs -- perhaps as many as 25 -- across multiple divisions, including hardware and Android departments, according to Gamasutra. One of those employees is Valve's director of business development, Jason Holtman.
Gamasutra dug around and compared Valve's current employee directory (which has now been pulled offline) to that of one that was cached a month ago on The Internet Archive. There are nine missing names, presumably all affected by the round of layoffs, though nothing has been confirmed.
While Valve wasn't willing to talk specifically about the layoffs, Gabe Newell did tell Engadget that none of this will affect its product lineup.
"We don't usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I'd take the unusual step of addressing them. No, we aren't canceling any projects. No, we aren't changing any priorities or projects we've been discussing. No, this isn't about Steam or Linux or hardware or [insert game name here]. We're not going to discuss why anyone in particular is or isn't working here," Newell said in a statement.
Another big name, Jeri Ellsworth, who served on Valve's hardware R&D team, has also been fired, according to one of her Twitter posts. Ellsworth was reportedly working on controller ideas that might have been used with the so-called Steam Box. In addition, Ed Owen, a senior mechanical engineer, updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect Valve as a previous employer.

Fact: Since there's already been a "steambox" demoed, albeit not from Valve, the point is thus drawn that it is not "vaporware" as you claim. The fact is, anyone can build a steambox if they choose too. Vaporware is an idea that never comes to fruition. This is already bearing fruits.
Fact: A lot of pc games have gone digital download. As have movies and music and software etc. etc. etc etc. This is not a bad thing. It saves me a trip to the store. And btw, if you haven't noticed, console games are going to same way. The selection at your local Target and/or Wal-Mart is half what it was a year or two ago if you haven't noticed. Fact: I had no issues with Guild Wars 2 out of the box. Yes Diablo 3 had some server issues, but beyond that, the game played just fine for me. Don't give a damn about Skyrim so I wouldn't know. Fact: If someone makes something, someone will buy it. Just because it's out there doesn't mean everyone buys it, otherwise we'd all be driving Lamborghini or Shelby sports cars. Your logic is flawed as usual. I don't know anyone that has a $1000 dollar video card. Most people I know that game are perfectly happy with the $100 to $200 video card. Fact: PC Gaming is up over the last year if you bothered reading the numbers. It will continue to rise. Console gaming has dropped off due to lackluster performance of six and seven year old consoles. Might pick up again next year when the new consoles are out. Might not. Don't care.
Fact: You may know how to put it together, but do you know how to fix it? Boy, I've been repairing computers since 1994. Been building them since before that. Been programming since the 80's. Until you know how to hold a solder iron and swap out caps on a board to repair it, or cut and mod a case for a custom solution, can handle a plasma torch, or better yet, take a stripped down Laserjet 5000 with all it's screws in a little glass jar and build it back up without a service manual and have it working, then you might approach the level I work on. Yeah I noticed that. It's kind of funny actually. I always thought consoles WERE pc's, just with proprietary hardware and os. I don't really get what the fuss is all about. Isn't there room enough in the world for both? It's kind of like the whole linux versus Windows thing. Nowadays I bet there's more linux devices in any given household than Windows. Doesn't mean I don't still use Windows. I just think there's room for everyone. I think he knows he's gotten under davelray's skin. The first post of his that I read I tried to approach him like you did, with calm and reason. Now when I run across one of his post I feel compelled to contradict him in fear that somebody might buy what he is selling.
I agree with you completely that consoles are just specialized PC's, just like smartphones and tablets. It's just that the current console generation (Xbox 360, PS3, etc.) has lasted too long for the console's good. My Xbox will be an 8 year old platform when its successor comes to market. PC gamers are offended by this because it has stunted the growth of technology. Warrior is right on one point, which is that game studios are more worried about producing games for the more profitable console market than they are for PC's. So PC ports of console games don't look a great deal better than their console counterparts. What Warrior doesn't get is just how much better games would look if MS and Sony hadn't milked their cash cows for so long. He hates on the Steambox when it could bring PC games to the livingroom and bridge the gap between the console and PC. This can only be a good thing.

It's BS, how? Where is motion in PC games? Why are hardware manufacturers trying to turn PCs into consoles and not the other way around? Why are devs and market analysts running from the PC? Fact: I play on both PC and console depending on my mood and the game I want to play at the moment. PC still has better performance. You simply can't argue that fact. Stop trying.
Fact: You don't "own" your console games. You simply bought a license to use them. Trust me, the purchase price to "own" any particular game is far beyond your means. But since you don't know what ownership entails, I will leave you to your delusions.
Fact: I don't know anyone who owns a $1000 dollar video game. Yes they exist, and yes I'm sure there's more than a handful to buy them. But that doesn't mean they are neccessary. I have not, I actually thought YOU were done. But I took notes and was going to respond, then yet another fool enter the conversation and he had to be dismissed. I've read those rumors about the new next gen console going download only, Epic has made a damning statement saying that they can't wait and retail is inefficient ect. I know M$ said along time ago that download was the future. It's already started on the PC in spades. I don't care who's doing it. I play on everything remember. It's an attack on gamers! It's control. Valve was just in court and lost about this very thing trying to control more of "your" gaming. Yet you kiss their @$$. They just changed their EULA and fired some very key people. Maybe that had something to do with it. Where was this reported at why wasn't it reported here? It had to come up in an argument? I think that this is an indusrty wide thing. Whatever console maker that doesn't do this will be starved of games. You didn't "disprove" $h!t. If you did pull the quote were I said what you claim. You haven't done that. I never said a controller was "superior" to a m/kb in FPS and MMOs. If you think I did..."prove it". I said a controller was more popular due to that fact the cross platform FPS games sale more on the console. "You" said that they don't make MMOs for the console and got owned, because they do.
I posted many comparison links and NEVER said all console games look better than PC games. If you think I did..."prove it". I said the games looked the same or if their were differences it was in like water, shadows, basically physx stuff. For 8yr old console hardware against a top of the line PC, there is no way that you can say what you saw in those links looked like the PC blew the console away. It didn't!! All PCs are created qual and don't always look better than console games, it just not true.

So yes, there are MMORPG's for consoles. I'm pretty sure PSO is no longer running, and Everquest Online Adventures shutdown earlier last year I think. I didn't like FFXI all that much. Haven't played DCUO so don't know if it's any good or not. I have seen some screen shots of Defiance, which is tied in with the new SyFy series of the same name, and it does look really good. Also, it will be out for PS3, Xbox360 and Windows. And on that note, I'm off to play some more Lollipop Chainsaw. It doesn't get better than killing zombies with a cheerleader that carries her boyfriend's head around.

What did you want me to prove? All I said is it doesn't look like your winning any arguments. LOL. If you were, they'd stop arguing with you. I'm not sure you can "win" this argument either. It's like watching two guys fight over which truck is better, Ford or Chevy. When it comes to gaming, everyone has their favorite platform. It's no different than arguing over whether PS3 is better than Xbox 360. Did you want me to prove you wrong in that consoles are better than PC's? That's easy. If you compare either of the current generation consoles to current generation PC's you'll find that the PC has a far more capable and powerful processor at least in the midrange and up. And there are quite a few video cards on the market that run circles around those consoles. But that's not really fair is it? I mean you are comparing brand new technology against seven and eight year old tech. When the Xbox 360 came out in 2005, it sported a custom PowerPC 3.2ghz triple core custom processor designed by IBM. It was an extremely capable processor and lends itself well to the fact that they've managed to go this long without releasing a new console. But it's not good enough anymore. The best it can do is upscale 720p games to 1080p. That's why we need new consoles. Especially if they are going to have any hope of driving 4k resolution televisions that will soon be coming out. That's why PC has the edge right now gaming wise. Outside of gaming though, the PC does other jobs that the console simply can't do. But as you point out, it's easy to afford a console for gaming, and buy a low to mid ranged PC for all the other tasks, or better yet, a tablet if all you need is email and web surfing. But to say that the way a game looks when played on a console is "just as good" as the way it's played on a PC configured for gaming is wrong. And that's where I said that the others have proven you flat wrong. Because you are. Now if you are like me, the difference isn't noticeable enough for me sit at a desk and play on a PC versus relaxing on my couch. But the difference is noticeable enough that you can tell the difference. Just like I can tell the difference in a movie on dvd playing on a blu-ray player to get it upscaled, and the same movie playing off a blu-ray disc. What it comes down to me is comfort over higher graphics quality. As long as the graphics quality does not affect the overall gameplay, I'll keep to my sofa. If it's a game that's only out on the PC, and it's something I really want to play, well that's when I trudge to my desk and play it on my PC. I like having that kind of flexibility. Of course, if it's only available on PS3, I'm shit out of luck there since I don't have one. Did you want me to prove you wrong about digital download? I'm not sure I understand what you have against digital downloads to say one way or the other. If you mean how digital download only threatens the resale of a game? If so, I would I have to agree with you on that point. But since I don't buy used games, preferring at least a portion of the money I paid to make it back to the developers instead of none of it, and I don't sell the games I buy, it doesn't really affect me. And that's just console games mind you. I don't know of any places that buy used PC games. GameStop was the last place I knew that did that and they stopped that four or five years ago. PC games were too easy to pirate. Those with activation codes or DRM were too much trouble to deal with. Just not worth it. But with the new console rumours, looks like even if they weren't going all digital, you'd still be seeing tighter DRM, once time activation codes and other such stuff. But so far I haven't seen PC games that are digital only. The only game I've seen with a "scratch off" card like you've mentioned was Diablo 3. And it's sold both ways, retail box with physical media, or scratch off. Either way, it has a key that's linked to your battle.net account. And since the key is what gives you access, once used, it can't be sold. And before you start quoting the legality or reselling your game, what good is that going to do you if Blizzard figures out the battle.net account has transferred hands and bans it? It's their servers, their rules. I don't like it, but it is what it is. You play games like Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft etc. at your risk since you are playing it on their servers and the game does you no good without access to their servers.
But outside of the complexities of reselling a game, I personally do not see anything wrong with digital download purchasing. That's how I have Bioshock and Plants vs Zombies on my XBox 360. On the topic of $1000 dollar video cards I don't see a problem with that either. davelray made the best argument for that, so I have to side with him. What's the difference between paying $1000 for a video card that's overkill instead of a more affordable video card that gets the job done, and buying a $100,000 sports car to drive back and forth to work in when a $20,000 or less car would do the same job? It's a matter of perspective. You never know, someone might be a amateur 3d graphics designer and actually need that powerful of a card. Or maybe their a race car driver. Who knows? It's not for me to judge what someone else does with their money. On the topic of broken video games. More often than not, consoles do have an edge here. Since all the XBox 360's have virtually the same components, it's easier for a game designer to make it stable. But there again, there have been console games plagued with issues. I seem to remember there being more than a few problems with Skyrim on the PS3 for example. Another good example would be Battlefield 3 which had a host of issues across all platforms. So I can only imagine that the PC platform would be prone to having a lot of day one issues. Different graphics cards, different processors, different memory and everything else. I played Diablo 3 a bit. I had a heck of a time getting in to play the night it went live. But that wasn't an issue of the game itself. The game was fine, it was the servers that were the problem for most people. Once I did get in to play, I enjoyed it. Perhaps this will settle you kiddies down coming from someone who's actually neutral on the subject as I enjoy both console and pc gaming and I see the merits of both. Can't we all just get along? Is a gamer truly defined by what platform she or he prefers? I think not. Just my humble opinion.

But I never said that you couldn't do it, or shouldn't do it. I called the Steambox "vaporware" and it is. I said that the Xi3 wasn't the Steambox and it's not. I said the PC games were going digital download only and they are. davelray said that console games were diminished as well, and they're not! He couldn't prove that. I've posted multiple comparison shots of console games vs a "high end" PC and the games looked the same, or if there were any differences it was more shadows an physx type stuff. But in reality the "high end" PC DID NOT blow the console away and Paper Jam agreed with that as well! Now Paper Jam is bringing up processors and said that the Core 2 Duos were high end when those consoles were released. He's wrong again, the 360 was released earlier and had PowerPC 3.2ghz triple core that was superior to the Pentium 4 and Pentium Ds. The 360had unified shaders before Nvidia and ATI had them on PC! History can't be changed!! So tell me how I lost again?
Look, nobody cares about what other things the PC can do. We know that, it's a moot point. When people want to game, they get get up from the desk and go to the living room. Or MANY PC gamers own consoles flat out.
I'm into Home Theater, so ANY talk of 4k right now is so premature it's not even worth speaking about. There is no software to speak of and all of the AV components coming out now are upscaling your Blu-Ray to UHD. But, the PS4 rumor is that it will support 4k! Where is the 4k drive and cards for the PC?
Diablo 3 AND Starcraft 2 are both Scratch off card, and the're not the only games in town. Digital download is the devil. It's "control" and you just spoke of it. They want to kill the second hand market and stamp out retail for starters. Epic went there against retail, so this is an industry effort. There is so much unknown at this point too. If I want to play a game on my buddy's console all I have to do is take a copy over there. Now, I may have to take my whole machine there even though he has his own.
Consoles do have the edge when it comse to broken games. But at least there is some kinda QC on the console and none on the PC. So the dev eventually leaves the game to the wolves or worst yet releases the game in beta form to fix it later and the gamers suffer for it.

Since this is a public forum, I've hardly instigated myself anywhere. If 4k televisions and monitors are premature, why can I already buy them? You named two games with scratch off cards but you haven't addressed the fact that they are not download only games. Digital downloads of games were one of the highlights of the Sony PS4 event. Get used to it. And a lot of people care that PC can do all sorts of other neat things. You obviously do since you have a HTPC. You obviously do since you have a regular PC. Or did you lie in other posts about building those things yourself? And not everyone that games, gets up and leaves their PC to go play on a console. As for calling you a kiddie, well if your going to act like one I'm going to refer to you as one. It's better than some of the names you've used.
