US Creating Fake Internet For Cyber Wargames
Hot on the heels of LulzSec and Anonymous joining their havoc-wreaking forces to bring Operation Anti-Security (#AntiSec) to an Internet near you – "we encourage any vessel, large or small, to open fire on any government or agency that crosses their path" – comes news that the US, at least, doesn't plan on taking the DDoS shots in stride. DARPA, the cutting edge defense agency that helped spark the creation of the Internet we know and love, is putting the finishing touches on a mock Internet called the National Cyber Range that US cyberwarriors will use as a training ground in future Web-based wars.
Lockheed Martin and John Hopkins University have both been developing a prototype Cyber Range for several years, Reuters reports. DARPA plans on choosing which system it likes best and putting it through the ropes throughout 2012. Hey DARPA! We'd pick John Hopkins – at least they haven't been the victim of any embarrassing National Security-related hacks recently. The final cost for whipping the whole thing together is a reported $130 million.
The National Cyber Range is actually designed to be a bunch of separate testbed modules that can be used independently for smaller tests or joined together for large-scale simulations. A key feature of the system is the ability to reboot the individual modules after completing a test, Reuters noted. In addition to training the nation's cyberwarriors using what we presume can only be a series of Matrix-like kung-fu simulations and building-hopping exercises, the government plans on using the National Cyber Range to probe the capabilities and flaws in network protocols and communication technologies.

If all it took were some high profile DDoS attacks to get the military to do this, maybe we got off lucky.

As you said they've been working on it for several years, I've also known about it for about three years. Probably from MaxPC. Interesting, the timing of the Reuters report. This is the correct kind of PR (for a change,) for the government to use, to appropriately re-assure the public, while also giving the hackers a more proper and less-disrespectful (and therefore less provocative) notice.

That's RICH! "Military" actually flirting with "intelligence"! Can't wait to see their baby!

I actually thought about this some years ago when Russian hackers shut down Estonia. China's government has been actively hiring hackers and quietly encouraging attacks on the west. We are way behind the curve here.

I know of at least 5 Romanian hackers, sorry especially bright kids, some part of the US administration hired during the past 3 years "for the greater good", after the naughty boys hacked open networks of the FBI, NASA, etc. Let alone the grey matter the US hire from the other countries in the region, Russia, India, Israel. You are only good at looking in the neighbor's yard, yet what happens in your own you don't perceive as equally condemnable. You live in a constant state of fear that everyone wants to attack "THE WEST" for some reason, or that someone else drew the gun on you first (Pearl Harbor, Vietnam and other "good" examples). You do that. It's the most basic level the human brain can be in. And the most susceptible to yield knee-jerk primitive responses among the masses ("war" - even easier to pronounce than "mom"). Forget critical thought. Sorry for not being rough enough, it's early morning.

Whether you like it or not, we have enemies that would like to see us fail. Condemn war and war planning as primate gesticulation and vestigial cold war paranoia. You do that. Its the blindest the brain can be, and the "most susceptible" to yield knee-jerk defensive recusal amongst the masses ("peace" - even more appealing than "Reese's Pieces"). Forget the reality of international competition in an emergent technology. Sorry for not being rough enough, it's 3 AM.

We are slowly making it possible for Ender's Game to become reality.

not exactly ansible communications were philotic..philotic connections were biological....not technological, and were far smaller than any subatomic particles currently known to man...so unless this unleashses a violent fervor into quantum mechanics and ultimately what could be considered quantum biology then i dont see it happening

I was refering to the idea of making simulations so realistic that it is impossible to tell the difference between a real war and a simulated one.
