Upcoming Nintendo DS to Dish Out 3D Visuals (without the Goofy Glasses)
Nintendo's super sized DSi XL hasn't even been released yet, and already the company is talking up the next iteration of its popular handheld. It will be called the Nintendo 3DS and it will allow gamers to get their three-dimensional groove on without the need to don any dorky glasses.
"This will certainly stimulate demand for the DS, Rakuten Securities analyst Yasuo Imanaka said. "But, we need to keep in mind that this is a portable machine. If you expect the kind of full-blown 3D visuals shown on TVs or in movie theaters, you could be disappointed."
It's unknown exactly how the new system, which is slated for release in Japan by next March at the latest, will reproduce 3D effects without the aid of glasses, but one one approach would be to use some sort of head tracking mechanism. Arstechnica posted a video of a game that does exactly that, and the effect seems to work well.

When I heard Nintendo was working on new hardware, I was hoping that they were coming out with a Wii that not only plugged into my TV with an HDMI cable but also had a reason to do so.
Seriously, how many DS's do they think they need?

I really like the DS, but I see this as a potential Virtual Boy all over again.

How do you figure that it'd be another VirtualBoy?

A personal Digital gaming device made from cardboard is awesome. I want one. I hope the 3D doesn't change at all from what is pictured above.

The joke wasn't funny the first time, why would it be funny a second?

My biggest questions is that with the DS XL just having been announced, why are they announcing this so soon?

The XL is targeted to a different demographic, and to those who have yet to get a DSi. Most people don't follow this stuff anyways, so they won't know about it until E3 or later. I am still getting an XL since I want accessto the DSiWare stuff.

Will the 3DS take off, possibly, but they thought that about the VirtualBoy, and we all know how that turned out!

The VirtualBoy failed for completely different set of reasons. From how it was implimented, the fact that there were people reporting eye fatigue/damage, an almost non-existant library of games, the fact that it ate batteries, was large and combersom to use, etc.
MPC, can you guys fix, or remove that damn spam filter? It blocks legit. posts, and yet there's still plenty of spam flying through!

This is a new platform. It's the successor to the DS, not a new iteration of the current system, regardless of what Maximum PC states.

That maybe worth a few bucks if they can pull it off.. Literally a few bucks, looks like cardboard and colored with markers.
