Universal Backs Away from $60 New Movie Rentals
Just days after its plans were leaked, Universal Studios has decided not to go ahead with $60 at home rentals of an upcoming film while it was still in theaters. The service was slated to go through trials in Portland and Atlanta, but theater chains strenuously objected to the proposition. Faced with a possible nation-wide boycott, Comcast’s movie studio relented.
The idea of premium rentals was floated a few months ago, and theaters expressed doubt then, even with the prices so high. Movie studios felt that some consumers might be willing to pay more to avoid dragging the whole family to the theater. Some like the plan, but others felt the price was exorbitant. Now we might never get a chance to find out if it would have worked.
For most, the movie watching experience probably isn’t as good at home, except for those few with legitimate home theaters. But even at $60, it could end up cheaper than a family outing. Would you pay anything approaching $60 for a movie at home?

after hearing comments like this...
"I live in a house of 7 people, and local ticket prices are 10 dollars. this would be much more economical. or I'd hit some friends up and charge like 5 bux to contribute to the rental and beer fund"
i agree, i haven't been to the theater in over a year. around here they charge $12 a head x-large soda was $4.99, jumbo popcorn is $6. last time i went i spent more than $20. the nearest theater is about 20 miles away but the seats are so uncomfortable i would drive to the next theater. theaters are just not economical any more, when i was a kid i would go to the super saver and watch movies for $2.

At first I thought $60 was outrageous. And then I thought... at $12 per ticket for a family to go it would make sense. There's 5 in my family. I would pay more than $60 to go see a movie with no one else in the theater. People are soo rude and annoying. I hate going to the movies for that reason. Plus over priced food and candy and such. It would actually be a steal. Especially if they let you watch it in 1080. I guess it helps when your family has a home theater room to.

you can still find people in the movie theatres?
Last time I went we had the whole 3d imax theatre to ourselves, it made those pre film: please dont disturb anyone else, turn off your cellphone and other digital blah blah blah seem ridiculous
would be wise to actualy go ahead with the move in this direction before the theatre eventualy declines alltogethor

Well, with the crap movies that are being made year after year, both options would be horrible. You couldn't PAY me $60 to sit through 99% of the Liberal garbage that is being produced in "Hollywood" anyway.

You must be joking my ass off. $60 for THAT???? HELL NO! In that case, if the only alternatives are going to a theater or waiting for redbox to stock it, I'll just wait for it to become avalible on thepiratebay.org or forget about it entirely. Greedy corporate morons...

Would I pay $60 to rent a movie on open box office day to watch on my pathetically normal 1080p led hdtv with my family and friends? That would be a no. I'd rather go out for the movie theather experience for the same cost and like most people here, i'd wait for it for bluray release if I want to save money.

I can see why this flopped. Where I live, I would have to spend 10+ bucks for a ticket, 3 bucks for popcorn, and another 3 or 4 for a soda. Double that if I take another person AND spend 20 bucks in fuel to get to the theater and it's STILL less than 60 bucks.

I just saw "Real Steel" this past weekend.
2 tickets, one drink, one popcorn......$32.65.
Thats the LAST time I goto the theatre. I had no idea it was THAT expensive to watch a movie in low-res projection.....
Its Redbox for me from now on.

Pfff, not in this life time. Maybe if friends came over and pitched in, but that only happens on holidays. I'll wait for DVD/Bluray or piratebay.

Would you pay $60 for regular definition and possibly more for HD? Would you pay even more for true 1080p HD?
There are so many possibilities and the Trial run would have been good to see what happens. Back to square one it seems.

We hardly go to movies anymore, we just wait. The textkiddies and the angry birds players as well as the outrageous prices for tickets and snacks makes going to the theatre a very occosional thing for us.

I learned from A Few Good Men that strenuous objections don't work. What do you know? The movie was wrong.

That is because everyone would do exactly what I would do. Which is invite 10 friends over, everyone brings a different group snack or beer and $5 a head, and we all watch the movie together. Best idea ever.
