Unity 3.5 Open Beta Brings 3D Flash Support
Last month when Adobe announced the end of mobile Flash development, it also made it clear that where PCs were concerned it would continue to “innovate with Flash where it can have most impact for the industry, including advanced gaming and premium video.” This was after it had rolled out Flash 11 for PC browsers, adding support for hardware accelerated 3D graphics that it hoped would power console-like games. Now, Unity Technologies has announced the release of the Unity 3.5 open beta (download) that includes a developer preview of the Adobe Flash Player deployment add-on.
The company had previewed the Flash export feature in Unity 3.5 at its Unite 11 conference in San Francisco in late September, with the release of Flash 11 the following month paving the way for the public release of the feature. It has also announced a game development contest, which gives developers a chance to enter their Unity-based Flash games for a shot at the $20,000 grand prize and nine other prizes worth over $30,000 in all. The “Flash in a Flash Contest” started with the release of the open beta on December 22 and will remain open for entries until January 5, 2012.
"Our vision has always been to let developers take their games to as many places as possible -- and Flash deployment greatly furthers that," said Nicholas Francis, Chief Creative Officer at Unity Technologies. "While we normally wait to ship our software until it's rock solid, the Flash publishing option is just so awesome that we had to do a developer preview. I can't wait to see where our new and existing users will now take Unity."
