Uncensored Version of Left 4 Dead 2 Shot Down in Australia, Still Banned

Sorry, Gabe Newell and co. You gave it your all, we’re sure, but in the end, Left 4 Dead 2’s true form proved too gore-splattered for Australians’ delicate palettes. Or at least, that’s how the Australian government sees it. Said a note from Australia’s Review Board:
“In the Review Board’s opinion, Left 4 Dead 2 could not be accommodated within the MA 15+ classification. The computer game contains a level of violence which is high in impact, prolonged, repeated frequently and realistic within the context of the game.”
“In addition, it was the Review Board’s opinion that there was insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional ‘infected’ characters. This was a major consideration of the Review Board in determining the impact of this game on minors.”
It’s true! We totally have friends who – if you squint really hard – are the spitting images of Boomers and Tanks. Oh, there’s also that one guy with the crazy-long tongue. But we don’t really talk to him. Wait. You say the Review Board was talking about "general zombie figures"? And here we thought our colossal, bile-spewing buddy had finally found a country that would accept him with open arms.
Ahem. Anyway, Australia’s still on track to receive a heavily censored version of Left 4 Dead 2, which is better than nothing, we suppose. Oh well. Aussie gamers, if our site hasn’t already been censored, better luck nex—[content blocked because we’re pretty sure it had a knife].

The Australians continue to lose freedoms and sit around watching it happen. If those opposed to banning and limiting rights in Australia would be as organized and motivated as those taking them away, they'd not be in this situation. Good luck down there....

One more point for New Zealand. Given a couple more years of this, the entire world is going to be laughing at Australia. Have you all in Australia considered a law so that everyone has to wear matched socks? I knew an Aussie who had trouble with that, and found it disturbing. Also, if you could outlaw Marmite, that would be fantastic. Us foreigners find Marmite breath offensive.
Thanks!

The middle paragraph of this article, that is a quote from the Review Board, is stating that they object to so much violence against the common infected, who look very much like regular people. Not so much of a problem is violence against "clearly fictional" characters like the special infected. The subsequent mockery implies that they said there wasn't enough differentiation between the special infected and regular people.
I'm very much opposed to such heavy handed censorship, and think that the Review Board deserves some healthy mocking, but you should at least mock the point that they're actually making.
It seems to me that the government serves the people, and if Australians would voice their discontent at ridiculous censorship like this, they government would get the message.

Well Gabe Newell actually got petitioned to come to australian around 2
weeks ago and when he was here he himself tried to convince the review
board to approve the original content for L4D 2 and was denied. Im assuming this article is the follow up to gabe newells attempt. The Australian Review board is not the problem here its lack of a higher rating system. My first post explains why we havent got it.

This shabby treatment is astonishing me. It's a video game, and movies don't get thrown into this rating system? It's sad, and if there is an online petition, I would sign it. Now question is, would a petition work? Something has to be done, this is starting to sound like Korea banning Ghost Recon because of a fictional war taking place in that country.

Yeah I think the main problem they have with it is the incorparation of melee weapons and using "phyical" force to kill your enemy that looks more like a human then a monster. Its funny when they announced L4D 2 and the flame war was on I was quite seldom about it. As long as i get my new content at an appropriate price, but now im thinking if they did just added the content from L4D 2 as downloadable content for L4D this probably wouldnt of happened. It would of taken a longer time for them to distribute the content but i would prefer that then a half cocked version. I can only speak for the Austrailan L4D community but i think the commited L4D players in Australia are going to think twice about buying this game and if we dont have the uber competitive people driving these games with dedicated servers and clan wars as such. I dont think L4D 2 *censored version* community is going to be nearly as strong in comparison to what it is now.
sigh

I have no idea what the censorship board is thinking hey. They approved the bloody SAW game and thats alot more graphic from what I saw(pun) so i dont understand how they are classifying their games. You would think they would be all up for it since they included a cricket bat as a melee weapon in the game. lol

Why isn't there an mature-esque rating for games? Didn't Hostel 1 and 2 get released in Australia uncut? How can you say something like that is okay to enjoy, but a game where u shoot zombies goes too far? Do they think people over 18 have no desire to play games?

im not from Australia..nor do I pretend to know what kinds of shops they have there...but in this case It would seem appropriate that you could sell a "full version" of L4D2 at say..an Adult novelty store....yeah thats right, selling a "violent" videogame, with porn, and other "objects of affection"...but that might be too graphic of language for the aussie gov't

Just to give you an indication on how full on our government is going. The government is trying to a push a law so that its actually illegal for you as a parent to let your child watch more then 2 to 3 hours of television if your child is under the age of 3. That could well include games on a related topic, But Like come on its a fucking given that you shouldn't do that, why do we need to a law for it....

Personally, I feel bad for the people of Australia. They're being treated like kids by their own government. Honestly, if you're a 20-year old male in Australia, or even older, you should be able to determine what you feel is appropriate enough for you. It's like relying on the government to raise your own kids because the government doesn't think you're capable enough to handle it on your own. Australia, you have my deepest sympathy for the way your government behaves. I'm 20 and I couldn't imagine having to still feel like a child, even though I'm an adult.

Coming from Australia this is real pathetic. Like Im not sure if America have an R rating system for their games but in Australia we don't hence why this is happening. The way it works in australia if we want a new legislation you need to get the concent of all the governor generals (which run each state) to approve. All but 1 governor general approved of an R rating system for games. So more of this shit is going to happen if they dont do something about it. Personally this is incrediably annoying because I am 20 years old and massive fan of L4D. I would appreciate my govenment giving me the freedom to play what i want instead of them telling me whats best for not only me but everyone that plays games which now days is so broad you cant keep the same static classification.
So i understand if people laugh at this because i would be doing exactly the same thing if i wasnt in australia lol

Maybe a stupid question. But is it possible for you to have a relative that lives somewhere the "full" game is available and have them mail it to you ?

We don't quite have an R rating in the US. It's Mature (Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.) and Adults Only (Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.).
