Uncapped 101Mbps Broadband? Yes, Please!
With all the hubbub surrounding bandwidth limits and tiered internet, it would seem that dark days lay ahead for broadband. So excuse us if we refer to Cablevision as a beacon of shining light, as the cable company today became the fastest cable ISP in the US with its Optimum Online Ultra service.
Optimum Online Ultra takes advantage of the multi-channel DOCSIS 3.0 standard, and by doing so, Cablevision is able to woo customers with up to 101Mbps peak downstream and a more than respectable 15Mbps upstream. On paper, that make's Cablevision's service more than twice as fast as Comcast's 50Mbps package, but it's the lack of a bandwidth cap that may ultimately prove to be the biggest draw for consumers.
Long Island, New York residents will get first crack at the new service starting May 11, which will run $99 per month.

I LOVED Optimum online. They put Time warner and comcast to shame. Even their regular internet service was much faster than the TW I have now. It makes me want to move back there.

They've got this part of the country (NE Florida) locked down. What ever happened to competition? I keep hearing how Verizon offers 20Mbps service for the same as we pay of 12, but it's not available in our area.
101Mbps would be insane! And uncapped? We seriously need that down here...or at least an ISP that doesn't dictate how you use your Internet service.

I wonder how long it will take TWC to come up with some way to attempt to stop this, even if it's not in an area they service.

To New Jersey, and then I will be happy :) Verizon taunts me with its "Demand FiOS!" advertisements, yet they make no moves to place it in my area (despite demand lol).
On another note, why does America have one of the slowest and most expensive internet services compared to the other nations? I was recently told that the Japanese have far faster internet and they pay about $16 a month. Ridiculous.

it does get very irritating when you read that TWC pulled in about $4 billion last year from their internet service, but only spent $146 million on upkeep/upgrading the infrastructure.

America has a lot larger distances and more equipment that needs be updated/maintained than those countries too.

That plays a role, jcollins.. But there's a lot more to it than just "that". Hey, whatever did happen to those billions we gave the ISPs to put faster cable lines down a few years back?

Dear Cablevision,
Please move to Ohio, so that I can get uber speeedss. Ohio and New York aren't that far apart geographically when you look at the United States as a whole. :}

I apologize for being critical but you mean to tell me in order to get 15 megs of upload I gotta eat 101 megs of download? Excessive maybe? I mean seriously whats it going to take to get a symetrical cable connection? Something reasonable like 10/10 ????

There is basically no demand for 50/50 split of download/upload. I personally don't know anyone who actually wants uploads to go as fast as their downloads... I'd rather have much more download power than upload as well.

I think you are not quite understanding how it works. It's not that there's no demand, just about anyone who games seriously or does torrenting will tell you that upstream is just as important as downstream. The reason upstreams are so slow is most likely to keep people from running web server farms from their homes. You have to remember that if your upstream gets saturated (which is likely when they only give us 1.5-2 mbps) your downstream speed will go completely to shit. I used to have a roommate that would torrent like crazy on the wireless and I'd be trying to play WoW and my pings would go from about 100ms to over 1000ms. just cuz the upstream was saturated from bittorrent.

Well, you can download everything you want at really fast speeds without limits, so who's complaining?

Do the people behind these companies honestly think that customers won't be upset and look for alternatives if they're going to impose crap like this on people? How stupid can people be? If this company expanded this to a nationwide service, all of the other companies would go broke because no one wants to live with their crappy little bandwith cap. Am I right or what?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In summary, bandwith caps SUCK!!

I used to live out in the island a couple of years ago and I had Optimum Online. It was the most amazing cable provider I ever had, and the only other one that I used was Cra - I mean Comcast. On downloads I would get a steady 1.5 megs down, they did not cap uploads back then. I hope that Comcast gets obliterated by another provider who has better business practices. But atm I'm very happy with Qwest 6 MB down for $30 a month.

Give me some of that! I'm sick and tired of being able to get nothing but DSL with oh so not impressive 180KB download speeds. Besides, it's almost always down with rain, lightning..I just live in a bad spot. I wish FIOS would reach out to me but no chance in hell in Carroll County, MD.
Do you have any idea how long it takes to update L4D with new DLC? Download a HD Trailer? Suffer through large Service Pack downloads? Uncapped, unrestricted througput is my kind of animal! I'd gladly pay for at least 15Mb download speeds from FIOS if not higher. Anything would be better than the 3Mbs I currently get. But I'll set aside $100/mo for 101Mbps. I know it's somewhere in my budget... ;)

You only get 180KB down with 3Mbps? I would call up your provider, I get ~300KB down with my 3Mb (AT&T).
