I think what has been overlooked is the definition of irony. Either that, or the statement was so ingeniously crafted as to completely veil its true intentions from lesser mortals (read: everyone).

A good example of irony: mocking ultrabooks in favor of Apple products which contributes nothing to the actual discussion.

Goody.

So on-topic: did you look at the diagram and see Apple not describing the exact unique shape they designed for their MacBook Airs? Is there any conceivable reason that a PC manufacturer would have to ape that exact shape? Are ultrabooks supposed to be wedge-shaped of functional necessity?

They were awarded the patent so I'm guessing these questions have already been answered sufficiently. If you have something to add I'm anxious to hear it. This other crap above, like a tire manufacturer trying to patent the round-shape of their tires, is completely off-the-mark and irrelevant. Tires must be round as a necessity of their functionality. I know the pea-brained just type whatever idiotic thing first comes to their minds when it comes to the brands they dislike, but you didn't make such ridiculous statements. So please enlighten those of us who are earnest in this discussion.

Objective objections?

You significantly weaken your point with the ad hominem attacks.

Yeah, go ahead and reply and call me a pea-brain, blah... blah... blah. Internet tough guy.

So nothing of substance from you either then? If you read the comments I think you can tell who I was referring to as pea-brained. I'm guessing you just don't notice ad hominem attacks until they are done by someone in disagreement with your opinions. Did you make a statement equating the shape of tires with the wedge-shape of MBAs? One is necessary for function and the other is not. I'm certain you know that and that my ad hominem was not in reference to anything you said.

I'm not worried about who's tough on the internet. If this was the case that lunatic acidic would be benching like 350. Give me some reasons why Apple should not patent their design.

Wedge-shape...Apple...go... (I wish this was a forum with a moderator.) If my point was so significantly weakened then it should be easy to refute.

I blame the patent office for this ridiculousness. Such a patent will almost certainly be stricken down in court, but it shouldn't even come to that if the patent officers were doing their jobs properly.

this goes hand in hand with
the adamant statement Steve jobs made
claiming he would never give up trying
to ruin android as he believed the concept
was stolen from him. It was an arrogant assumption
that all computer ideas belonged to him, as he
and he alone thought of all of them FIRST.
The natural evolution of the concept of computing
and the devices we use should allow for a consensus
that sometimes function, dictates form and would
allow the same shape to be a natural evolution
of the product.

Apple, please die--you are a nasty disease that infects the ignorant.

wow! seems like apple is taking things too far. if your product is good people will buy it, making a fuss over petty things wont win you customers.

Am I wrong in thinking this could cover a majority of laptop designs? A Wedge shape covers a lot of notebook designs. I'm sure Apple will only use it for an unfair advantage in Ultrabooks though.

Apple also put a patent on the colour "blue". US courts have ordered the sky to change colour immediately!

"Just ask Samsung, which has been accused of copying the look and feel of iDevices with its Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets. Isn't patent law fun?" crApple doesn't have ANYTHING that resembles my AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-I717. They aren't that intelligent. Never have and never will own anything stolen and redesigned by crApple.

Give me a huge flaming break! I guarantee the original designers of patent laws never intended a shape to be patented and delegated to one company.

This stuff makes me sick. Not because it's Apple, but because it's blatant corporate monopolistic bullying.

I don't know how they got away with it, but the grantors should be fired for stupidity and investigated for bribes.
