Ubuntu 9.04"Jaunty Jackalope" Officially Released
Available in alpha form for the past several month, Canonical has officially released its newest version of Ubuntu, 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope). Canonical says it will maintain its latest open-source OS until 2010.
Ubuntu 9.04 brings a new kernel to the table, version 2.6.28.8, as well as several other features. Some of these include:
- Faster boot time
- Latest GNOME 2.26 desktop environment
- Better handling of mutliple monitors
- Latest X.Org server 1.6 with support for several new videocards
- Wacom tablet hotplugging
- Ext4 file system support
- Brasero 2.26 (all-in-one CD burning application)
Also new to the latest version of Ubuntu is a Netbook Remix version. According to Canonical, the Netbook Remix brings even faster boot speeds, a "built-for-purpose interface" that keeps favorite applications and websites a click away, enhanced power-management features, and easier switching between networks. Canonical says it has tested its Netbook Remix version on a range of netbook models, including Acer's Aspire One, Asus' EeePC 1000, and Dell's Mini 9.

I have 9.04. I love 9.04. My only gripe - the theme is still terrible. I can't wait until 9.10 and the new look!!

Whats so funny about this release is that I live in Wyoming so of course the Jackalope is our favorite mythoical creature up here so having the Jackalope is just awesome. Makes me wonder what the folks at Cannonical will call the next release, Kicking Kangaroo? Anywho if you've been running Jaunty since the beta or RC there is no need to reinstall to the the actuall release. It will update itself to the release as the updates come out. I installed the RC on one of my machines and on release day there were no updates to it so it was already up to speed at the RC level. One thing I wish that Maximum PC would do is also touch on the other flavors that they offer. I am a Kubuntu user and there have been some major updates to that flavor as well. We are now running on KDE 4.2 which is just friggin awesome, new network manager, Amarok 2 comes standard, new power management interface, update manager got a new face lift looks a little more like MS update but I'll live with it. System settings got a new interface. Check out more at www.kubuntu.org

Ubuntu really needs to add a bittorrent download, it took me 5 tries to actually get it downloading (got a message saying to many people were downloading) and the 5th time the download failed... I just woke up and am starting the download again...

Tried it... Didnt work... it has to do with a problem with (i think) 200 series cards and SLI, but it doesnt rly matter any more, I wrote down the lines I need to edit in xorg.conf and as long as I do that the normal drivers will work great

Been testing the RC for 5 days now, and it looks and works just great. Made it boot up in 23 seconds with a Duron 950MHz with 512MB :D
Recomended!
