Ubisoft: 50% of Games to be 3D-Enabled by 2012

Videogames are only just now beginning to take their first wobbly steps into the brave new gimmick world of 3D, but by Ubisoft's estimates, they'll be winning Olympic gold medals in sprinting in a mere two years.
“The 3D games are going to come more and more with the TV screens that are available,” company CEO Yves Guillemot said in a recent conference call. “I think next year we should maybe see 15-20 percent of games that will be 3D on next-generation consoles. And then the following year it will be 50 percent.”
These days, the 3D space is predominately ruled by Nvidia's 3D Vision initiative on the PC, but between Sony's plan to have PS3 games popping right out of screens by June and Nintendo's recent announcement of the 3DS, it seems like 3D Fever's spreading fast.
Movies, TVs, and now videogames – what's next? Real life? No, no. That's just ridiculous.

I think that soon all the games will have at least a 3D option. Still, there a lot of games that will not work on the 3D platform. I can't imagine a Jewel Quest Solitaire in this way. I suppose that many games are good as they are now.

You are truly ridiculous if you watched a 3D version of Avatar without the glasses because you thought it looked better that way. Avatar was great in 3D.

“I think next year we should maybe see 15-20 percent of games that will be 3D on next-generation consoles."
What next-generation consoles? I haven't heard anything from Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo about a new generation of consoles. In fact I heard the opposite; that they're content with what they have.
Surely he doesn't mean those boxes in the living room that are half a decade old?

Surely I'm not the only one that is getting seriously tired of all this 3D nonsense. Its marketing hype people. 3D has been done before and faded away because it was nothing but a gimic. They're not just rehashing old movies now but old marketing ploys as well. I saw Avatar and felt that it was a great movie encumbered with this awefull 3D garbage. I watched most of the movie minus the glasses because it was better blurry than popping out of the screen. Does anyone truely think this adds any value to the material your watching or is it just wow factor that you haven't gotten over yet? I refuse to see any more movies in 3D and will not submit to games being in 3D either. I am absolutely sure I can't be alone in this.

After reading this article, i thought to myself, "Isn't Ubisoft about a year behind?" In the pc-gamming world Nvidia launch 3-D graphic cards and they had a small, but very good selection of games that you could indeed play in 3-D. It was only a matter of time before 3-D gamming would come to the console, even faster with the release of 3-D T.V. Keep in mind, those t.v.'s are not true 3-D. They are a new version of 3-D that was created, which many where exposed to when they saw any 3-D digital movie in the past 2-3 years. This version of 3-D was created for people that are color blind. If you remember the old 3-D glass (like the ones in the above picture) you had a red lense and a blue lense which picked up on those colors. Due to it beening colors, color blind people could not enjoy 3-D movies. Then this newer version of 3-D came out, where the main image is closer to the camera then the background, kinda gives it a 3-D feel, but actually would be kinda the oppeste of 3-D in the aspect of the image not popping out, but pops in.
I already enjoy playing W.o.W in 3-D and would like to see an xbox360 (or any consel) nooked up to a 3-D t.v.

By the very nature of how video cards render a video game, every 3d game is already in 3d. It's simply a matter of the video driver being enhanced to output the third dimension in the protocol that 3d TVs expect. It's just software, no hardware change necessary. Even the consoles only need a firmware update.

I very much disagree with your review. The 3d effects in Avatar were spectacular, the depth of which was even more evident in Imax. If you think the image on screen looked the same both with and without the glasses then you must have a somewhat severe vision problem.
As much as I like the concept and technology behind 3d, the necessary equipment is and will be out of my price range for quite some time.

I want to believe, but the news is coming from Ubisoft... can't really trust them anymore.
I bet they will only allow 3D Mode if you're connected to the internet while playing their games lol.
