Did you have trouble posting to Twitter yesterday morning, the first day of the 2012? The social networking site became overloaded with tweets at around 3PM GMT, precisely the moment the new year was being celebrated in Japan. Celebratory tweets reached 16,197 posts per second before Twitter gave up the ghost and entered an hour long coma.
"It's amazing how three words can ruin my day! Twitter over capacity," one user tweeted, according to the Daily Mail.
Being unable to post a Twitter message shouldn't cause anyone to have their day ruined, including Twitter, which can take solace in the fact that it's experiencing explosive growth. To wit, Twitter was processing 'just' 6,366 tweets per second on New Year's eve one year ago, SimplyZesty reports.
The record for most tweets per second is 25,088 set in December 2011 during the Japanese television screening of Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky."
