This is a Triumph: Portal Goes Free until May 24

Hello there, non-existent reader! Yes, that’s right: you don’t exist. After all, you can’t. You’re reading this site, which means your rig’s probably a feral monster – more beast than machine – but this article caught your eye, which implies you don’t own Portal yet. To say that someone of that description exists – why, that’s just silly.
Let’s say, though, that hypothetically you’re a real flesh-and-blood human being. And you don’t own Portal because – we don’t know – you just came out of a coma or something. And you’ve spent every waking second reconnecting with your family or whatever. We guess that’s a valid excuse. If that’s the case, click here, and then give the big red button a press.
And presto! Now you own Portal, and you didn’t have to spend a dime. Wasn’t that easy? Almost as easy as changing the television channel or closing your Internet browser so you can—hey, wait!

I believe Portal: Prelude, a mod for Portal is free as well. Anyone know?
I never read about Direct2Drive. I've gotten some good game deals from them too.

There are plenty of free mods if you look. There is an add-on based on the flash version of portal that is really good and it adds tons of levels.

And, wherever you are in the world, you owe it to yourself to try Portal if you haven't already. The game is a couple years old now and it shows, but still, it was a brilliant breakthrough in gaming mechanics, storytelling and level design..
And the Villain is delicious.
Yes the game is rather short, but was bundled for 50$ with 4 other games - and better yet, it is now free.

All PC users have already played this game. Now that it can work on MAC's, let me say, enjoy it. You are only a few years behind since you cling to that crapple device. Enjoy your leftovers.........bitches. :P

You know what they say about assuming? I am a PC user, and never played this game until now, it's not a game I'd go out and buy, but since it's free for a while I decided to download Steam last night and try it.

I think it's more odd that you don't have steam on your machine. Have fun, I loved this game.

I don't have Steam, because I don't have a credit card, so what's the point of having a platform to buy games digitally when I don't have the ability to do so...!

You don't need a credit card to buy on Steam.
You can use Paypal or a pre-paid visa card (if you buy a 50$ card, you have 50$ credits)

Um, maybe because you bought a retail game that uses Steam for activation or authentication? Several retail games (and not just ones from Valve!) come to mind.
Regardless of that, I, for one, welcome our single-button brethren to the world of real gaming!
(and yes, for you pedants, I do know that Macs have support for mice with more than one button...)

I've never in my life bought a retail game that uses Steam, so I have had no use for Steam. Once I figure out how to beat Portal and beat it, then I will uninstall Steam.

Actually once you see the good deals that crop up often on Steam you'll keep it and use it a lot. There are also other perks to using Steam: Automatic patching of games, the ability to download your purchaced games anytime you need them (no more lost or damaged DVDs). The ability to download and play your games on any computer with your Steam ID. This comes in handy once in a while. My kid loves TF2 that came with Orange Box but I don't so I let him play it on his computer with my Steam ID. There is also a solid Steam community.

As I said earlier, which you seemed to skip over: I do NOT have a credit card, so Steam is useless to me!
