T-Mobile to Offer Contract Free Unlimited Plan for Those Who Don't Want to Commit

There’s a lot of wisdom in 60s rock ballads. Take The Lovin’ Spoonful, for example: “Did you ever have to make up your mind? Pick up on one and leave the other behind?” So it goes with cell phone contracts. It’s not just the agony of being locked into a one- or two-year deal, it’s also having giving up on what might have been. T-Mobile hopes to lessen the pain a bit with a contract-free unlimited plan.
In most cases if you are uncommitted cell phone providers won’t do you any favors. Its either pay-as-you-go, or a restricted prepaid monthly allotment of minutes with big penalties for going over. T-Mobile, however, will give you unlimited voice, text messaging, and web surfing for $79.99 a month. This is a 20 percent discount over the standard unlimited monthly fee. But, and there’s always a catch, you have to bring your own phone to the party. T-Mobile will also offer a $50 per month unlimited option for those who only want voice.
Reuters reports that neither Verizon or Vodafone weren’t impressed by T-Mobile’s move, and have no plans to follow suit.

Why do we care about

Why do we care about Verizon? They are a CDMA network and not GSM so they lose no phones to T-Mobile. However, T-Mobile is very friendly to hacked IPhones and I am betting this is a move to make this more attractive.

It sounds great until you keep looking. I was really excited about the family data plan, but all the "Even More Plus" packages (the ones without contracts, which is the only option for family plans now) require you to pay full price up front for your phone. Meaning that instead of $200 for the myTouch, you pay the retail $500. Good deal? Not so much.

Nobody's gonna give you a break on a phone without a contract. The contract is where they make up for the money they lose on the phone.

Oh they will, will they? Why in the world would I do something like that when I can pay $56 a month, AFTER taxes, and get unlimited everything and awesome service with one of the smaller prepaid like MetroPCS? Now, IF I traveled a lot (which I don't) then maybe. But no thanks, thats still far too much. That $79.99 is actually closer to $100 bucks a month, and thats entirely too much to pay for cellular service.

This is something that needs to come to Canada too! And not on those budget phone services "Koodo" or whatever Roger's is (I think it's Fido).
