The rapid pace of technology has led to the ability to pack an impressive number of features and hardware into increasingly smaller systems, and that's what VIA has done with its new Artigo A1250. The Artigo A1250 is supposedly the world's smallest quad-core system, a statement VIA qualifies by limiting to x86 rigs (otherwise that distinction might belong to an ARM-based smartphone).
Featuring a 1GHz VIA QuadCore chip and the latest VIA VX11H media system processor (MSP), the company claims its Artigo A1250 device is ready to tackle a variety of computing chores, including applications in a home or office environment, home server duties, home automation, hotel management, media streaming, digital signage, surveillance, medical and healthcare applications, and the list goes on.
"By leveraging the ultra compact Pico-ITX form factor, the VIA Artigo A1250 is able to deliver a powerful x86 quad core computing experience in the smallest system design on the market," said Epan Wu, Head of the VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies, Inc. "The VIA Artigo A1250 boasts the latest technology with 3D stereoscopic display and USB 3.0 support for an unparalleled ultra compact computing experience, making small truly beautiful."
As for size, the system measures 17.7cm (W) by 12.5cm (D) by 3.0cm (H). It's a full 10 percent smaller than the Artigo A1150 series and is power efficient with a 32W TDP. Ports include HDMI, VGA, GbE LAN, two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, and audio jacks.
No word yet on price or availability.

Been wondering about VIA. Good to see them still kicking. Been wanting to do a build for my truck since sandy launched.

Pretty much anything vehicles already do, just with more balls: media storage, GPS, voice calls. I could finally have a use for my infrared usb webcam. Its all just an issue of getting the right peripherals.

And with USB 3.0 you could pair this with an external USB 3.0 enclosure with a WD7500BPKT in it! Desktop performance in a small form factor. I've loved these drives for a while. Being external makes it easy to bring back and forth to put new media on or download update packages. I've been waiting for something like this as well. And with only 32W power consumption this is perfect for vehicles that benefit from smaller power draws.

If this thing can fluently run games at 1280*720, I could use this to replace my ridiculously noisy PS3... VIA needs to whip up some benchmarks...
