Tegra Will Power the Next Nintendo DS

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Nvidia's Tegra platform continues to woo big-name customers, most recently attracting Nintendo, who reportedly is in talks with Nvidia to provide some extra oomph for its next-gen DS handheld console.

The deal marks a win-win situation for both involved. For Nvidia's part, no other handheld console would put Tegra in more hands, courtesy of the DS's 68.3 percent worldwide market share. And for Nintendo, tapping into Tegra gives the company's console a power boost sure to be well received by consumers and developers alike.

Until more details are released, we can only speculate on what the next DS might be like, but it's at least feasible that on top of the added muscle, it will also sport backwards compatibility with the existing DS library, assuming Theo Valich's sources prove reliable.

What will also be interesting to watch is how this relationship between Nintendo and Nvidia plays out in the home console market. Might Nvidia replace ATI as the graphics vendor of choice in whatever supersedes the Wii? We'll have to wait to find out.

avatarWhy hate nintendo?

Nintendo is to the xbox/ps3 as the netbook is to the laptop: both sacrifice performance and high end gaming ability to cater to the mainstream markets. I personally like nintendo, they have a kid freindly library, handy motion control (while maintaining gamepad control schemes) while at the same time being forced to focus on gameplay instead of pure graphics due to hardware limitations- which drastically improves game quality.

Why hate?

avatar THe Wii has a number of

THe Wii has a number of non-kid games in it's library. Heck it got Manhunt 2 (DId it come out for either of the other 2 consoles?). Red Steel, Metroid Prime 3, and that game thatjust came out.... It's all black and white except for the blood... I forget the name. But those are just 3 games that are no where NEAR kid friendly. Heck, even Twilight Princess isn't for kids.

And once you play some Rayman Raving Rabbids... you're hooked!

I'm guessing Mario is red for ATI, and Luigi is green for Nvidia?

avatar I doubt it, Mario and

I doubt it, Mario and Luigi have been around far longer than ATI or nVidia.

avatarStill...

I think a picture of luigi staring down mario (the only time they'd ever do that would be for a super smash bros. brawl promo pic, 'cause hey, they're the nice guys) with the ATI logo behind mario and the nVIDIA logo behind luigi would be a good pic for this.

avatarI just bought a DSi a few

I just bought a DSi a few months ago and they are already comming out with a new one?  I new I shouldn't have been an early adopter for this.

I have a zune hd and I think that the tegra will surely add alot of graphics power to the ds.  Hopefully there will be a way for me to transfer my dsi ware to the newer ds.

avatarAgreed!

However, its surprising. I would expect the Wii to be replaced before the DSi. Anyway, knowing Nintendo, the new consoles will be seamlessly backward compatible with the DS and Wii.
