Success: Verizon Wireless Drops $2 Convenience Fee
Let it never be said that the Internet can’t be used for good as well as evil. After a huge online backlash, Verizon Wireless has backed away from plans to begin charging a $2 “convenience fee” to customers for paying their bills online, or by the phone. The change was supposed to go into effect on January 15th.
If Verizon thought they were going to sneak this one by the Internet, they were clearly mistaken. The outcry rang loudly from every blog in the world almost immediately when the change in terms was discovered. Verizon claims that the fee was going to support the aforementioned payment methods in the future. The only way to circumvent the charge would have been auto-billing, electronic check, paper check, or in-store payment.
As if the negative customer feedback wasn’t enough. the FCC started making noises about getting involved this morning, urged on by consumer complaints. Verizon folded faster than we expected. Do you think they’re going to try to make up the difference elsewhere?

When a business accepts merchant (credit card) accounts, they don't get 100% of what they bill. In the past, businesses would pay it, paying out of all of their customers' payments. What's more morally perfect, I'm not going to work-out. But, I automatically KNOW, that... I HATE FEES. They need to just shut-up and do it the old way. People would pay $2 a month, just to not have to hear the freaking word: "FEE." Who TF likes a "FEE?" NOT ME! ;O) L8r!

I wish Ripoffzon would charge a straight bill instead of trying to nickle and dime me.

I was thinking about puting together a patition to eliminate bad weather, taxes, asshole drivers, Mother-in-laws, monetary foreign aid, sucky TV informercials when there could be a great movie on instead, Star Wars prequils, and people that say Really? way too much.

Time to punish Verizon for just trying to pull a fast one.
Just drop them and pick a new company!
They must pay!

The freedom of the internet definitely helps us protect ourselves. That's why I'm so unhinged by these self-same companies lobbying to push through bills that allow them control of our access, hosting, and visitation. SOPA being the most obvious example right now.

Verizon are dicks, just like every other mobile provider.
I still am not happy with them for their utter botching of the Nexus release... a mistake they are continuing to make every day (no 3 pin charger for car dock, no multimedia dock/cradle yet... wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a slanted piece of plywood for $50).
The thing is, aside from this hurculean online effort to get this fee removed, they don't give one whit about individual customers. They hate their customers. Have a problem with Verizon? What do they give a damn? You're nothing but a nuisance to them.
I'm still with them only because 1) they are my company's provider still (surprisingly, to be honest), 2) they still have the biggest, most complete network. Yet, despite my phone being on thier network, I sure hope Google never works with them again on a Nexus.
Bunglers...

Oh and check this out...
This is the vehicle dock without the 3 pin charger connectors. Just about EVERYONE has rated this piece of crap 1 star. Yet, at the very top of the page, and again right under "40 Customer Reviews" (as of this post), they show a 5 star rating, which is "implied" as the average rating from all customer reviews.
It's like, they know people are angry about this item, but they want to show a good rating so they show whatever the H-E-double-hockey-sticks they want to at the top of the page.
Dicks...
(LOL I must be in a bad mood today, more so than normal. Forgive me if I offend...)

Damn reading the reviews and then looking at those five stars made me think I was visiting some Chinese ripoff store site that thinks all of its junkie products are wothy of five stars. Very startling that they have the guts to allow actual reviews to be posted and not fake praise reviews.

Hell they should take off $2 because were paying online. That makes it convienient for them so they dont have to sort through all that paper. What a joke...

This.
People don't realize how much it costs to have companies hire someone to print paper bills. Companies try to use the "go green by paying online" bit when really they're just trying to save themselves money and look good in the process.

"Verizon Wireless has backed away from plans to begin charging a $2 “convenience fee” to customers for paying their bills online, or by the phone."
Instead they will just add it to the cost of your plan each month, and you idiots will pay it without noticing.

I think the new york times had it right when they said
"When Verizon says it won't charge $2 for online payments, it's saying it'll get $2 out of you in some less obvious manner. Some victory."
these asinine charges are why they simply don't get my business. oh well. I can't believe anybody would actually defend this move btw and then criticize others for "taking their business elsewhere" when they are unhappy with a particular service. this was a bullshit charge, and they got called on it. period. end of story.

I knew it was going to happen somehow, and even if the FCC didn't get in the way the customer backlash would've gotten big enough that they would've had to retract the fee. Still, it shows what a bunch of assholes Verizon is, and I don't think they deserve to have people's business. I'm still seriously considering cancelling my Verizon phone.

They backed down only because the FCC got involved. Dont believe them saying "we listened to our customers" cuz thats complete garbage.

Look, people, I hate companies that try to sneak fees in just as much as the next man; however, these are companies we are talking about - they have to make a profit. Besides, if you're in a contract, why wouldn't you want to setup an automatic payment system? You either pay the bill, or the company is kind enough to let the credit bureaus know what kind of a fuck up you are. I know, I know, not everyone HAS the money ready by a certain time period, but even my credit card companies offer automatic payment setups, which allow me to specify the dates they can widthdraw from my accounts. In fact, I consider auto-withrawls a convience because I have peace of mind knowing that if I manage to forget, that my checking account will automatically be deducted. I know, I know, not everyone has a checking or savings account in this day and age. How, I do not know.

There is a reason why you dont do autopay for your cell phone. Unlike your car payment your cell phone bill varies wildly. Lets say you were the women who was charged the $20k a few months ago and on autopay. Lets say hypothetically you had the money and without you knowing your bill it was taken from your account. That women was able to get her bill down to $1k however if Verizon had gotten the full amount it would be a cold day in hell if you got your money back. In other words it is easier to negotiate with Verizon when they screw up before you pay them.

I dont know what backwoods cell phone carrier YOU use but my bill has been the same.
$225.98 for 1400 shared minutes, unlimited text and data for 2 lines and another data line for my Xoom.
Its been exactly the same since I got my Xoom.

Look up cell phone bill shock. It's extremly common for a person to go over the limits of their plan and get a matching bill for their actions. ATT, Verizon, Sprint.... all the major carriers have featured articles about it.

I think that used to be common, but now I think most contracts are more than adequate for peoples needs. If they can't stay within those limits they need to contact their carrier about a more accomedating contract, or ask to put a spending limit on the contract.

My bill has been the same as well. But odd occurences of the bill changing have happened. Billing mistakes have happened with Verizon. If I remember Verizon was actually overcharging people by a few dollars every month and went through a year or two lawsuit / investigation of finding out they were wrong and having to repay people their money. I myself don't trust autopay for anything. I only do it for insurance cause I have too.

I like Verizon. A lot. I sell Verizon (not the reason I like them). But $2 is dumb. I have called in to ask for an Auto-pay in the past, and they weren't supporting it. Then a change of tune? I don't think so.
They should have consulted with Netflix to see how well getting by bloggers was going to work out for them. haha
Thank god for the power of the internet

Probably would have when fine if they would have just gave everyone who used autopay a $2 discount. They could of snuck in a price increase later.

I'm really not surprised lately that companies have been getting fucked over as a direct result of online communities spreading the word about such acts, like what Verizon just tried to pull. That's why I love the Internet. It truly does help spread information and knowledge faster than at any other point in our history.
