Study: More than Half of Web Retailers May be Breaking the Law

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

It doesn't take a study to confirm that there are shady sellers scattered all over the Web, but what you might not know is how bad the problem really is. According to a survey conducted by authorities in 28 European countries, more than half of all online electronic vendors might be running afoul of the law.

The survey honed in on 369 sites selling digital cameras, mobile phones, music players, DVDs, computer parts, and games consoles. A full 55 percent of them showed at least one irregularity, such as concealing charges, misleading buyers, or refusing to provide an address to return products.

Out of the sites which failed to make the cut as a safe haven for online shoppers, the biggest problem was failing to provide accurate information about a buyer's legal right to return defective goods for refund or repair for two years, affecting about 66 percent of said sites.

Meanwhile, Newegg still kicks ass, but where do you shop online for electronics? Hit the jump and tell us your experiences, good or bad.

avatarFor the most part, i use

For the most part, I use Newegg, to buy all of my computer hardware. But sometimes i use Google Shopping to price check stuff and may use a smaller retailer to buy a particular component. For a lot of other stuff i go to FrozenCPU.com , and Performance-PCS.com .

The Canadian version of Newegg blows. They don't have nearly as much stock (yet) as their bigger brother. I personally roll with NCIX.com. I like it, they have good deals and tell you prices up front. I've also dabbled with Tiger Direct.ca, just for some deals.

avatarNewegg kick ass

I agree, Newegg kickass! I returned a couple of defective products wiithout problem. After chatting with a newegg rep, the restocking fees were waived. As a matter of fact, newegg even paid for the shipping the products back to them.

Long live NEWEGG

I will agree newegg is the best.  I would like to say just a few things that do not make it past their screeners.

Merchandise sold as new but obviously returned and resold as new.  Defective product restocking fee?

I don't mind paying a restocking fee if I made the error but to sell something defective then charge me to get it corrected.  I left this comment as part of a review THEN my review was pulled when the product was returned Hmmmm is my review less pertinent?

NEWEGG IS THE BEST just a few policies that should change : )
