Study Finds the Gender Breakdown of Social Websites
Royal Pingdom did a little digging into the gender make up of several popular social networking sites, and the results just might surprise you. Think LinkedIn is mainly for men and MySpace for women? Or is it the other way around? It doesn't matter which of those notions you held, because they're both wrong.
As it turns out, the female population claim the majority of users on nearly all of the 19 social networking sites Royal Pingdom, um, pinged. Only Slashdot (about 82 percent), Reddit (65 percent), and Digg (60 percent) attract more male than female visitors. The other 16 sites have a greater than 50 percent female visitor population, according to Royal Pingdom.
If we're to take the data at face value, Bebo ranks as the most female dominated site with 66 percent of the users missing an Adam's apple (don't email us - we're fully aware that's technically incorrect). MySpace, Classmates.com, and Xanga weren't far behind, with each one made up of a 64 percent female userbase.
On average, females outnumber males on the 19 sites by a ratio of 53 percent to 47 percent, and if it hadn't been for the three news sites (Slashdot, Reddit, and Digg), that figure would be much more lopsided.
Are you surprised, or is this about what you expected?

How many of the female profiles are whores with webcams or whorts (whore bots)? So filter that in and it's like 3% of women are real and the other 97% are dudes trying to hit it.
Steve Jobs is the Devil and likes his web with a side of spam.

Was the study counting all accounts, or only active ones? I would speculate that the majority of bot/spam accounts are set up to look like females (and young, attractive ones at that). Depending on how many of those accounts exist, it could be enough to throw off the numbers.

Isn't the population of the US 52% female? So this says the user make up of social sites reflects the populations which means... there is no domination? I guess this just says social sites are reflecting the society.

I guess stereotypical versions of a story are sometimes true.
