Our national call center team of 5 guys tried IM for a while. BAD NEWS! One guy would be busy and another not, the the nonbusy guy would send an IM which broke the concentration of the guy working. "Just say no" to IM at work.

Instead what we did was use e-mail as a "delayed" IM messenger. We would purposefully wait until we were less busy and then look at email. In there, I would type an IM type message in the subject box followed by nt (no text) or mt (empty text). The subject line WAS the message and nothing in the message box. Easy to read and delete and could do it without all the interruptions.
