Steve Jobs Takes Another Medical Leave of Absence from Apple
While we don't cover all things Apple (we leave that to Mac Life), the news out of Cupertino today has affected everyone in the tech community. Apple CEO Steve Jobs sent an email to all Apple staffers to announce that the board has granted his request for a leave of absence to focus on his health. Of course, the internet is full of assertions that Mr. Jobs may be gone for good this time.
It may be no small coincidence that the announcement came on Martin Luther King day in the US. Markets are closed, so any overreaction to the news was muted. In Frankfurt, markets reacted negatively, with Apple stock losing 8%. The very business-like timing of the release makes us think this was not a last-minute emergency decision.
However you may feel about Apple products, there's no denying Steve Jobs has been a huge driving force in computing for decades. Jobs has survived pancreatic cancer and organ transplant in recent years. We wish him the best, and we're sure you all do too.

My dad's co-worker died a painful, slow death from it, deemed inoperable. My barber's mom died from it in the same fashion.
I've heard the survival rate for pancreatic cancer is less than 5%. I'm sure his fortune played a part in his survival but I would still call it a miracle.
Just ignore the trolls, please. A bunch of socially awkward, mouth breathing, cheeto engulfing, porn addicted, pale, pimple infested, thick glasses wearing, havent stepped in a gym in their entire life, has never put on a condom before, adult swim marathon watching, have avoided physical confrontation their entire life, dirty apartment dwelling, cowardly nerds who hide behind internet anonomity.

I wish him well and hope nothing goes wrong, but at the same time I would be glad if he never returns to Apple and someone more open minded takes his position. I don't mind the iPhone as a device, but the experience has been bad and I can mostly thank Mr. Jobs for that. Flash is used on so many web sites that it makes mobile web browsing pretty terrible on the iPhone. I'm lucky I didn't jump into the iPhone 4 scene because I would've been even more disappointed with the antenna ordeal. CEO's are far from perfect, but some of the things he does are just mind boggling.

Wow! Some of the comments here are downright despicable.
Karma (greed)? For getting a form of pancreatic cancer? I would think Karma would be more along the lines of his iPod Touch battery being defective and catching his car on fire.
It's not like he was an life-long alcoholic ... bought his way to the top of the liver transplant list in North Carolina ... got his new liver and three days later went out to celebrate, got totally wasted and killed himself in a drunk driving car accident.
Let me guess ... you haters also blame Steve Jobs (and all his money) for the train wreck that was known as Vista, right? He waved his magic money wand and Microsoft produced a piece of crap! And it took the Savior Steve Ballmer to make Windows7?
As for the PR nightmare comment -- and Steve Ballmer is a PR dream? Maybe Steve Ballmer gave Steve Jobs cancer when he re-gifted a Windows Mobile 4 phone at a Silicon Valley Christmas Get Together.
If this is a dream come true for some of you who hate Steve Jobs for what he has done for the Tech industry ... what do you wish for Bill Gates? A mosquito bite? Now _that_ would be Karma! Let me guess, Bill Gates' greed will also be his undoing?!
I feel embarrassed to be a subscriber to MaximumPC ... not because of the magazine (or because of Gordon's hate-filled rants about Apple) ... but because I'm associated with some people in this comment section.
I hope the Zombie Apocalypse treats you right. I know where I'm gonna be ... hunkered down in a CostCo with Gordon and company keeping you a-holes out!
And Yes ... I'm an Apple product user ... and a Microsoft product user ... and becoming a Linux user! What are you going to wish for me?? Death by Penguin? And let me guess, I would deserve it, right?

Greed ? I know what Bill and his Wife do for charity, but I have not heard what Apple or Steve Jobs do for charity. I am not being an ass I would really just like to know. If they actually do anything... for anyone else... other than themselves... or shareholders.

The only thing I heard concerning Steve Jobs and "charity" was after the transplant, there was going to be more attention given to organ transplant (or the shortage of organs for transplant) ... some legislation was proposed in California, but I have no idea if it passed or not (about a year ago). Outside of that, nothing.
As for Bill and Melinda Gates, I'm pretty sure once Bill retired from Microsoft, he was able to focus almost exclusively on Foundation work (malaria research among other things). And Microsoft as a corporation does their bit for charity.
Apple ... ... ... well there is Project Red :-/
Some people eat well ... some people sleep well. From the peanut gallery, it looks like Bill has chosen to sleep well. Steve ... well, I can't say he eats well because he looks like hell. The jury is still out and we may never know. That doesn't mean people should wish ill will upon them.

No, you are absolutely right. While I am no Apple fan what he has, and quite possibly, will go through I would not wish on my worst enemy. I do wish him all the best.

How can people hate somebody so much for being the driving force behind Apple that has made them the company to beat in several tech markets? Don't get me wrong, I am not an Apple fanboy. I don't own a single Apple product and never will. I am PC all of the way. My reasons for that have nothing to do with Steve Jobs or my feelings about him. I think he has an ego problem. So do most of the successful innovators and leaders of the business world. But reading through many of the comments here causes me to shake my head in bewilderment at the insensitivity and ignorance of some people. However, after twenty years of online experience I really am not surprised, just disgusted. The anonymity of cyberspace does tend to bring out the lowest of society.

This just goes to show no matter how much money Steve has or how much better he thinks he is than everyone else, In the end some of the poorest of the poor have something much more valuable than Steve Jobs with all of his money will ever be able to obtain again. Health.

I agree with all the posts about how low some people can be just because they don't like Macs or because they don't like Jobs himself. I don't take sides, even though my name is ShyLinuxGuy :P. Microsoft, for instance, has some great products (Windows Server, Microsoft Office), as well as some real duds (Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer...). Linux has its pros and cons. So does Apple. Apple's OS is pretty sweet, you'd have to admit. And Jobs, you gotta love him, because he's done a lot for Apple. If you've ever heard about the story behind him, Apple had let him go a long time ago and replaced him with somebody else (while Jobs worked on NeXT, which morphed into OS X eventually). Apple was sinking without him. He brought the idea of OS X to them as well as a lot of other concepts, and now they are pretty close in revenue to Microsoft! Well, I know some of you may not care, but Apple has released a lot of cool stuff! My first computer was a secondhand Macintosh SE (wish I still had that thing) that my mom bought me when I was eight. I don't own a Mac now, because I personally see Macs as computers as tough to upgrade or work on and not really justifiable for the price, but that's beside the point. Steve Jobs is a great leader and takes his job seriously. Steve Ballmer, while very funny, is sometimes questionable as CEO of Microsoft, however. Have you ever seen him and his comedious decorum at a conference or interview? And then see Jobs in comparison with his slightly witty yet businesslike attitude?
Get well Steve, and although I may not use your products, you are pretty admirable.

The man deserves a lot more credit than what your giving him. His health has been waning over the years yet he keeps on going, that shows a lot about a man. The fact that he pretty much single handedly BUILT Apple (for lack of better phrase) is impressive. And for those of you who think OSX is crap and they are over priced, then look at it this way:
Apple runs everything on proprietary software and hardware. Their machines are NOT OEM nor do they use any run of the mill parts either. Each mac uses a custom built motherboard from the ground up and everything is soldered onto it. Everything is built around OSX, not around the hardware, so this also makes it more expense. Anything custom made is expensive. On top of it all it is one of the most stable OSes around, next to linux.
Mr. Jobs deserves more respect than you are giving him. The guy is fighting for his life and yet you guys have the nerve to go and trash him.

No, he and Apple do not deserve my respect just becuase you say they do. Your points are mostly wrong, as I remember a time when Apple used to license their technology out so other companies could build and sell Apple branded ahrdware. When it cut into Apples profits bigger than Jobs anticipated, he ended the licensing deals, as the three other vendors were able to sell their Mac's for half, HALF!! of what Apple was charging. Jobs caused a lot of people to lose their livelyhoods when he did that, the greedy sob. Their market sahre would have been much larger, but he wanted profit or size.

As much as I dislike Apple and the related products, you must give the man credit for being the ultimate salesman. And as much as I hope Apple falls when Jobs leaves the company for good, I wish him well.

It just goes to show how LOW everybody can get when they really hate someone who's done nothing to them. Bunch of classless idiots and haters here. I understand this being a PC website but to wish that kind of ill will on someone just because you don't agree with his policies or so dislike his company...

You make it sound like you mean him ill will. Your comment should have been phrased something like: "I hope it's Ebola." Same effect but less mean and if he gets killed you aren't a suspect (unless he does have Ebola).

I really dislike the guy too, but I don't wish ill on him. If he were to retire due to health concerns and keep his nose out of Apple business and let someone who isn't a freaking nutjob take over, that'd be fine.
