Steve Ballmer Casts Resurrection Spell on Windows 7 Slates
After Microsoft scrapped plans to release its dual-screen Courier and HP pulled the plug on its much hyped Windows 7-based Slate (you know, before the company went out and gobbled up Palm, putting them in a webOS state of mind), we wondered if we'd ever see Redmond's latest OS make a run at the tablet market. Wonder no more, says Steve Ballmer, who told 14,000 partners during his July 12 keynote at the Worldwide Partner Conference that Windows 7 slates are forthcoming.
Not only are Windows 7 slates coming, says Ballmer, but in a big way. As the outspoken CEO tells it, Microsoft and several of its PC partners have plans to release Windows 7-based tablets in the coming months, including ones from Asus, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony.
These will ship in varying form factors, everything from ones with physical keyboards to touch only, from dockable tablets to slates with digital ink, and more, Ballmer says.
When exactly these slates will come to market is anyone's guess, but if everyone makes good on their plans, 2011 might go down as the year of the tablet. Everyone and their uncle has been promising to release a tablet at some point or another, with many aiming for late 2010.

Another market for Microsoft to experiment with, huh? They really just can't accept the fact that Apple is better than them in the mobile market, can they? Give it up and stick with what you know, MS!

I don't agree with this. I think if Microsoft had some decent leadership, then I think they could compete with the rest of the market's tablets and smartphones, and even hold a decent chunk of marketshare. The problem is, Ballmer doesn't seem to know what the hell he's doing.

Okay, Microsoft, listen up. Win7 is a great OS. It's powerful, it's flexible, it's stable, and it's efficient--for desktops and notebooks. For tablets, it is simply TOO powerful.
You need a simpler OS for a simpler device. Most people won't be doing text processing or gaming or programming on a tablet, and that's generally the heavy-duty stuff you would do on a full-fledged Windows platform. To add to that, to run Win7 on a tablet, the manufacturers would have to buy more expensive hardware to get it to run smoothly, and at that point, you're talking about iPad-price territory.
And as we all know, one of the major selling-points of PC's are that they are affordable compared to anything Mac-related.
My advice: Wait until WinPhone 7 is fully-baked, and ship THAT OS with your planned tablets. As much as Apple's arrogance infuriates me, I have to give them credit for finding the right approach for tablets: These devices are meant to be simple web-browsing, basic email-and-book readers, and they are meant to be cheaper than full-fledged personal computers. If you ship Win7 with tablets, you're basically just handicapping netbooks by getting rid of the keyboard and mousepad, while staying in the same general price-range.
So do yourselves a favor and finish WinPhone7 (or Win7Lite, which I think would be a more appropriate name) to build those tablets. I'd happily look at one if it was in the low-$200 price range.

Coming from Ballmer I'm thinking more of a Necromantic Zombie type of resurrection spell (he is, after all, a Lich), very similar to the Dark Unholy Breath of Life that Jobs uses to keep those Chinese factory workers alive.
And unless they come up with a touchscreen-friendly UI, I see epic fail for Win7 slates.

Win 7 tablets were on the way for months but what was the hiccup? I don't think they needed a reboot after the iPad because the iPad is a different animal and slots in below the features the Win 7 tablets offer. Is there a need for a Win 7 tablet? The new Windows Phone 7 would seem the better alternative coming up.
