Steam's Weekend Deal Will Blow Your Mind

Yeah – this is getting pretty ridiculous. Just when you thought Valve’s market-dominating Steam service couldn’t cut any more off its game prices without bleeding money, they go and prove everyone wrong.
This weekend, Valve’s offering the Orange Box – a complete steal even at its original price – for $9.99. For those who haven’t been keeping score, the Orange Box contains Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episodes One and Two, Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Really, the only things this virtual incarnation of said box lacks are, well, actual oranges and any sort of box. But hey, you’re saving the trees for cheap, and isn’t that basically the American Dream?
So, six amazing games. Ten bucks. Breathing lightly on piggy bank will yield you that kind of scratch. Seriously, if you haven’t played these games, what are you even waiting for? Afraid you might lose your job while utterly engrossed in your new purchases? Well, if Steam keeps topping itself like this, you probably won’t need much money to keep your gaming appetite sated anyway.

I got it just for Portal, because it is cheaper than buying Portal by itself. If you tell me how, I would be happy to gift the other games to whoever wants them.

You can only gift Half Life 2 and Episode 1 provided you already had them on your account before you bought the Orange Box. If that is the case, then you can find your gifts listed under Games Menu>Manage Gifts and Guests Passes. You can either send them to an existing Steam account or to a friend's email and they'll get all the info they need to download and create a Steam account as well as activate the gift on Steam.

No biggy as my local Micro Center run the same deals for pre-orders. This weekend if you pre-order Cyrsis Maximum Edition, when it release next month, you get it for $9.99. They do this all the time for big titles. I would rather have physical media in hand than a digital download that may or may not work properly.

Orange Box is tied to Steam even if you buy it retail so you wind up using Steam regardless if you get it retail or digital. Plus during install the first update is mandatory. Also, if you want to play TF2 all updates are mandatory.
In this case, you're stuck dealing with digital either in future installs or patches.

I'm glad you guys posted this. I just bought a copy for a friend. I'm not much of an FPS person, and when I tried playing the HL2 demo I got motion sickness, but my friend's the sort of guy who will love this.

Lol motion sickness. If you played wolfenstein 3d, i can understand but these games? I dont think so.
Maybe you should try maximum settings so it seems real enough that you dont get motion sickness

I used to get motion sickness in Half Life 2 on the highway level back when I had a 21" crt and that was with most settings maxed. That was when driving the dune buggy though. When I got a 24" widescreen lcd I fired up HL2 and didn't get sick during that level, but before then it was hell to play through it.

I agree with STEAM being a very buggy application, but strongly disagree on the game quality. Nevertheless, when I bought the game (s) today, I had to completely uninstall STEAM, delete the Program folder, delete the Registry Keys and every other possible trace. But when I got STEAM up and running, I was playing HL2 for about an hour, and I already have it for the 360, just shows how much of a fiend I am for HL haha

I know I am going to get flamed somehwere along the line for saying this, but not one of those games hold a shred of interest to me, especially since Steam lock up and makes my computer freeze or makes it slow every single time I use it. So really, this Oragne Box thing is of no use or interest to me whatsoever.

Fyi, if you already own some of the included games, Steam gives you the option of gifting them individually. That's rad.

If you can't afford a decent computer and "need" these games. I personally waited until I got my new computer built but they fixed the HL2 Xbox port problems.
It's still a better experience on the PC though.

WTF!??!!?! $10?!?!?!?! It's worth it just for TF2: the best multiplayer team shooter E-V-E-R!!! Buy this even if you've never played computer games, don't even own a pc or couldn't give a rat's arse: because you will. Support the team that made this game so they can continue to enrich our lives and make the world a much better place.
