Steam: Over 25 Million Served

We don’t want to jump the gun here, but we think there just might be something to this whole “Steam” business after all
.
As of today, more than 25 million Steam accounts have been created – of which, 10 million are decked out with customizable profiles. The long and short of it: there are still plenty of hardcore PC gamers, so long as you know where to look.
Naturally, then, Steam’s overall sales were up 205 percent in 2009, which – while we have no concrete numbers – probably translates roughly to “heaps upon heaps of cash” for all involved.
“Steam turned five years old in March 2009,” said Valve’s Gabe Newell. “With the introduction of each new platform feature released over the years — such as the Steam Community, Steam Cloud, and Steamworks — we’ve seen corresponding growth in account numbers, concurrent player numbers and developer support for the platform.”
A toast to Steam! Without it, PC gaming might well have dried up altogether by now. Or – worse – we could all be using Games For Windows Live. Dun-dun-dun!

I've got plenty of Steam games, from old classics to the newest release (my latest ST:O Deluxe, pre-order). In the last round of Xmas sales, I purchased over 20 games, bringing over 80 games in my collection.
True, I haven't had time to play them all but I could call it up wheneve and where ever I like - no more looking for DVD/CD hassles.

Cheers to Steam. Fair DRM, tons of game sales, many options to choose from, and non-intrusive. My gamer rating: Kick Ass 11/10

I am pretty sure they are doing something right when I am willing to pay more to buy a game on steam than from a store.

I bought 6 games this past year, All of them through Steam. Also looking at Bioshock 2, but I have to wait for that one, maybe for my B-Day. Point is, Steam is doing things right. Sure when they first came out I was sceptical but, as long as they continue doing what they are doing they will be hard to beat.

Mario and guitar hero... great for consoles.
everything else... PC please!
Congratulations to valve for understanding their customers and designing Steam appropriately. Valve knew exactly how to market pc gaming software, and they totally deserve the praise. In an era filled with so many pc nay-sayers the guys at Valve are exactly the kind of thinkers we need in the industry. Cheers!

I can say that after building, or buying 6 computers in 5 years, Steam has always been there for me. I can't say the same thing for Apple, or iTunes. Downloading...and keeping my information so I can re-download software and games is ESSENTIAL for any PC power user. Hard drives fail, back ups become corrupted, houses burn down, memory becomes too expensive......there are a million reasons to re-download something you BOUGHT and PAID for. Even on my Xbox 360 alone, that's a great incentive to keep me coming back. I had one HD fail, and I accidently broke another one. Where do we "back up" that information? We don't have too because Microsoft marketplace keeps tabs on all our purchases (I wish it could keep tabs on saved game information, lol). While I praise Apples ease of use, content, slick design, and shiney-ness, they are a pain in the ass when things fail. Try re-downloading purchased music from 3 years ago......Thank God for independant people that develop programs to help recover YOUR property. I swear, I just might have to go back to driving to the store, buy CDs at 17.99 again, because of the CONVIENENCE it has over downloading them in my underwear in my own home! Steam is a perfect model of a company that can deliver digital content, and keep both sides of the fence happy. If they only sold music.....

It is the only DRM that i can deal with. mainly because they throw us a bone. I can take my entire lineup and install it any number of times.. The only complaint i have is some certain publishers rather not use steamworks and use their own drm. That I do not like. When i rebuild my system, it saves days off it using steam. I have actually rebought several games that i already have because it saves me loads of time when rebuilding.

This last X-mas I purchased 10 games for myself and 6 as gifts.
Steam had some great weekend sales on games I wanted so I jumped on them.
and I just checked a few seconds ago and purchased 4 more games for $4.00 total.
you cant beat that
