Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO-Splosion -- "Biggest BioWare Game Ever Made"

The wait is over. Today, LucasArts and BioWare finally force unleashed the first details on their joint MMO production, and it sounds like the best thing that could possibly come from Star Wars and gaming's unholy union aside from a Jar-Jar killing sim where you blast Jar-Jars with a Jar-Jar launcher*.

The game will take place a few hundred years after KOTOR 2 caught fire and skidded off a cliff to an eventual -- and undeniably painful -- halt, and will cast you as a jedi, sith, or something else that you probably won't bother with. As with any BioWare title, MMOTOR will focus on story foremost, spicing up the MMO genre with BioWare's top-notch storytelling prowess.

And oh will there be story content. According to BioWare president Greg Zeschuk and CEO Ray Muzyka, the game isn't KOTOR 3, "it's KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. There's that much to it."

"It's a whole galaxy. It's a galaxy of Star Wars," they added.

In order to make such an ambitious story possible, The Old Republic will saddle you with single-player RPG-esque companion characters. You can change and manipulate them, and they can assist you throughout your adventures. As such, the game will "allow players to carve out their own epic stories," with your actions affecting the entire game world, as well as your characters' morality.

Even crazier, every class and faction configuration will have its own storyline. Lead writer on the project Daniel Ericson even claimed that his latest progeny could feasibly be played like a single-player RPG. There's that much story.

“If you’re a BioWare fan, you’re going to get everything you ever imagined from an extension of KOTOR,” he said.

We couldn't want this any more if it came with a ticket to beautiful women and infinite money island**. How about you?

avatarDo you have a beta test application URL?

Well, all the junvenile remarks aside, I'm looking forward to another unique offering from the Star Wars EU (Extended Universe), and would like to know if there's been any word on how to sign up to become an early Beta tester? (I participated in SOE's Star Wars Galaxies beta and loved the whole experience and even played for three years after the release...was disappointed that SOE changed the game I PAID FOR several times so that it looks and feels nothing like what is now known as "Pre-CU" SWG)

I'm willing to give BioWare and Lucas Arts the benefit of the doubt that they've learned what the real fan base is looking for and will provide a product to reach the faithful.

As an added note, I find it strange that the majority of the drival that has been posted points to this being a KOTOR release, when in fact BioWare plainly states that this is to be set uniquely in a time period hundreds of years AFTER KOTOR and three and a half millennia BEFORE "A New Hope."

May the Force be with you...Always!

avatarI'd rather Jedi Knight 3 or is it 4, 5 now? I've lost count. ;)

I loved the Jedi Knight games. Online play and LAN play where a hoot. It's time for an update with current technology. The Battlefront games are kind of sucky becuase they where developed to work on consoles which = terrible controls. Have you tried saber fighting in Battlefront 2? It's abysmal compared to the Jedi Knight games.

I will definately be checking this out. Thank goodness it appears to be developed for PC first.

avatarStop!!!!!!!!!

They need to stop making crappy star wars games and concentrate on making a kick ass Jade Empire 2 game.  I'm tired of star wars.  The last 4 movies sucked (I'm including that new cartoon thing). And although Kotor 1/2 were ok/good games, Jade Empire was an amazing game even with the super liniear story line. They need to make a non-liniear Jade Empire.  Sure they will make a lot of money off this MMO, but I don't see it doing much better than any of these other WoW wannabe's.  Eventhough it's star wars it's still not going to be as good as WoW, so they could take the money they are gonna lose and put it towards JE2 and we would all be better off.

avataryou are a filthy troll

WoW is and has always been a terrible game for 12 year olds

Jade Empire was good but it was pretty much the same game as the first KOTOR but in China

KOTOR and KOTOR II were awesome, although personally I'm kind of upset that that it's going to be an MMO instead of offline.

KOTOR was easily one of the top 5 best games I've ever played.  You clearly never played it because nobody in their right mind would say Jade Empire was amazing and KOTOR was just an ok game, Jade Empire was just a ripoff of the KOTOR formula.

Go play some World of Zoocraft and stop trying to troll the MPC boards with your stupidity.

avatarI played WoW for about 30

I played WoW for about 30 minutes before I got bored and quit, It's not my kind of gameplay.  I did play it, but that kind of game set in the star wars universe just didn't excite me.  There have been lots of games that have been ripoff's of other games but have been better than the original.  I liked the setting, story, and gameplay of JE better than KOTOR, I'm sorry your blind faith in that game doesn't allow you to be open to other peoples opinion's.  Jade Empire is not in the top 5 games i've ever played, but I liked it better than the KOTOR games.  Morrowind or Oblivion were much better games than both of those, the only thing that sold KOTOR was it was set in the star wars universe.  I'm just tired of star wars games and am ready to see something else get made that deserves a shot.

avatarJade Empire

First of all, Jade Empire sucked.

Secondly, Bioware is a big company, I'm sure they have enough staff to make an excellent KOTOR game and your crappy thing. While devoting more people, time and money to a game will get it done faster you reach a point of diminishing returns. It's like saying that 6 people can type a report faster than one can alone. Maybe they can, but will it be coherent? How much time will have to be spent making sure everything meshes?

Lastly, Star Wars has a huge following and will make Bioware money no matter what. Maybe they can use some of that to make your stupid game, and to recoup the losses when it bombs. Either way it will keep Bioware in the business of providing games that you can play or not at your discretion, and that's a good thing. So is giving WoW some competition, to keep them on their toes and drive them to keep improving their product.

avatarWow, that was the most

Wow, that was the most fanboyish post I've ever read.  First of all, Jade Empire was a great game, maybe you didn't enjoy it's fighting styles or its story line, but a lot of people did.  Star wars is so played out now.  I counted 24 star wars game reviews on IGN for PC alone.  Why not expand a new IP instead of rehasing the same old thing.  I also stated that it would make them a lot of money even if it sucks, and it will, just because of fanboys like you.  But it still wont take over WoW, nor will it even get any more people away from it than AoC or WAR.  When people have been playing for a few years and have purchased a couple of expansions, they are most likely not just going to drop something they have invested over $500 in just to start putting that much money into a completely new game.  So once again I will state that instead of putting so much focus on a game that will not be at the top of its genre, why not put the time, money, and manpower into a game that will dominate all the other games in it's genre and fill in a void that a lot of people have been waiting for.

avatarI've played Kotor 1/2, and

I've played Kotor 1/2, and I'm sure I'll eventually play the MMO at a friends house, but not everyone wants another star wars game.  I personally have seen all the star wars movies several times and have played 5 or 6 star wars games on different systems.  But I just like Jade Empire better than them.  I think that star wars as a whole is awesome, but I'm just tired of a star wars based game coming out every 6 months, when there are other IP's that are just as capable of being a great game and selling as good as a star wars game.  I know there are better game than JE out there so it's not that I'm a JE fanboy, I'm just really tired of star wars.  It's to the point now where they just have to make up stuff and stick it into the whole star wars universe just to make them interesting and I just think that being able to start from scratch with a different IP, whether its Jade Empire or not, is just a better way to go.  To be honest, if there were a set of movies/games that I were going to be a fanboy for it would be the LOTR series.  I loved the books and the movies and have played everything but their MMO.  MMO's require you to devote most of your time to one single game in one single genre and when you have a limited amount of time to play you like to mix it up a little, or at least I do.

avatarSadly I never have a

Sadly I never have a positive reaction to news of games based on the Star Wars IP.  How many tremendous flops have been produced?  I remember enjoying the flight sim (who's name I've since forgotten) that I used to play on my 386...  A friend of mine enjoyed the one for Xbox... Knights of the Old Republic was it?  Other than that, meh.

avatarWow, how jaded are you? You

Wow, how jaded are you? You probably should have played KOTOR at your friends or on your own PC, incredible story. The flight sim was prolly X-Wing, or Tie Fighter (you sure you enjoyed their flight sim and don't remember these names?) . You ever hear of Dark Forces? There is quite a lot of good Star Wars gaming waiting to be experienced out there. Some of it is even free by now.
