So I will be able to get an iPhone through sprint now but it won't be on 3G like one would be if I got it through Verizon or at&t since sprint just doesn't like spending money upgrading their towers.  Fail.

So what are they going to do if windows 8 tablets and phones start to gain popularity and people start ditching their iPhones for Win or Android?

The last iphone brought ATT to their knees in terms of network capacity.  Sprint is a small ant in comparison, where as it is you won't get reception in a lot of buildings when VZW and ATT are 5 bars.

Sounds like Sprint just said me too without actually thinking whether they were taking too much on their plate.

Actually, Sprint did their homework and found that Android users consume more data than iPhone users do. Most of Sprints user base is on Android handsets now, and it is handling it without issue for the most part, but they do not want to sit pat, as they do need to expand their network, which is what the $7 billion is for, their LTE rollout, which means no data caps. That is how ATT and Verizon handled their data issues, capping data instead of improving theri network. That would have been a me too if Sprint had followed that lead

Idiots.....  It honestly sounds like this was alittle overwhelming for them financially.

avatar

big_montana

No, it was not overwhelming fo rthem at all. Read their financial report, they ahve $2,5 billion in cash reserves, the network upgrades was planned even without the iPhone. No company pays for their infrastructure upgrades with their own cash, as this is a tax write off, you ever hear of capital expenditures? That is what this falls under, and a portion of it can be written off. So, who is the idiot here?

"So, who is the idiot here?"

Really? I'm not saying I'm a saint here on this website, but in all honesty, was that comment really that necessary? A simple, polite manner of telling the man that he was wrong would have sufficed, in my opinion.

You know what is wosre, then tossing someone else's comment back at them? Someone who is not a moderator acting as one, who thinks they are the internet and forum police. Sorry, but there has been much worse stated on this forum without retibution from teh mod's and YOU choose to call me out because I choose to indirectly refer to someones intellectual shortcomongs? If that is not the kettle calling the pot black, then I do not know what is! And as my daughers say, this is an A and B conversation and you are C, so butt out. If he or she was offended by my comment, then they will state so in time.

I am not the moderator, not am I the "forum police" here to beat the shit out of you for attacking another user; however, I am a fellow user who sees what you are doing, and is disgusted that on a self-respecting magazine company, such as MxPC, that they allow these types of comments to run rampant. What's worse is that you admit to being a father, yet you act like a child by calling others idiots and being pretentious.

"Sorry, but there has been much worse stated on this forum without retribution from teh mod's and YOU choose to call me out because I choose to indirectly refer to someones intellectual shortcomings?"

That is simply not true at all. There have been numerous people, including you, that I have gone after before. For example, you and several others attacked Holly in an article just because you thought what she said was stupid, and in line with communist ideals. It doesn't matter if what she spews out is complete shit to you or anyone else, as she doesn't deserve your backlash for it, unless she directly attacks you. Even then, you should be a man and let it go, or simply report the negative comments to MxPC. Even though that seems like a futile effort.

"And as my daughers say, this is an A and B conversation and you are C, so butt out. If he or she was offended by my comment, then they will state so in time."

And as the law states, whenever you talk on a public forum, go outside, or do anything that is not on your property, others can view you and there's nothing you can do about it. And while MxPC may not be a public domain, it is a privately held company, and has rules that even it should enforce but doesn't most of the time. I really wish there were moderators who cared to try to get rid of the negative comments from users, so at least then people would realize this is not a place to vent your anger out at other users, just discuss opinions in appropriate manners.

If you want to call people idiots, commies, or whatever is to your taste, I suggest that you create your own website, where you can talk about technology and bash those who you feel do not "get it." So you can bet your ass that if I see you labeling people, demeaning others, that I will have something to say about it, so that maybe others might see SOME of your posts for what they are - counter-productive and negative.

To bad you feel this way, as I have been on MaxPC's forums going back to teh day they were hosted by Delphi, and have been a mag subscriber since they were Boot, issue 1. You are not a mod, and have no business acting as one. Keep it up and you will get more than yo0u bargain for, as this is not your job. As you stated "you should be a man and let it go, or simply report the negative comments to MxPC". Obvioulsy, you cannot folow your own advice, so let it go. And I did not call this person an idiot or Holly a communist as you state. I do not flame, and hate trolls such as oyurself whose sole destiny in life is to make other peoples life miserable. As my Sicilian grandad once said, if some takes a crap on you, you take a bigger crap on them. May not be pc, but it is effective. Now, take your own advice, and butt out of someone else's conversation C. Also, there is no need for vulgarity anywhere, in life or on a forum, so do some growing up your self bwefore you call someone else out next time.

"And I did not call this person an idiot or Holly a communist as you state."

And I quote...

"So, who is the idiot here?"

Source: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/sprint_bets_farm_iphone_comes_short_green

and as for calling you a commie, I withdraw that statement. It looks like I had you confused with someone called blkpanthr, so you are right in that regard, and I apologize.

"I do not flame, and hate trolls such as oyurself whose sole destiny in life is to make other peoples life miserable."

Uh, you're the one flaming it up in here with your asinine comments. And no, my sole destiny in life is not to make other people's lives miserable. I don't know where in the world you got such a conclusion based off of what I have said?

"As you stated" "you should be a man and let it go, or simply report the negative comments to MxPC".

I'll give you kodus there. I should report your comments, and I will do that, but I'm not going to just sit by and let you mow over everyone because of your own self-righteous opinions about others, such as Holly.

Lastly, I can tell you're the one trying to be in the troll here. Intentionally drawling in people, just so you can start shit, as nothing you say remotely makes any sense at all. So the only conclusion here, that I see, is that you enjoy being noticed, even if you have nothing intelligent to say that is even remotely constructive. Now be careful, I didn't say you never had anything to say that wasn't intelligent, but you're last few posts on this article are making it mighty hard to see you for anything more than a troll.

Now, as you're only attacking me, and not others here, I see no point in continuing this flamewar you seem so hellbent on pushing in this article.

I've found that they only enforce those if you call someone an "Apple [other name for a bundle of sticks]" other than that you have free reign to do whatever you want, except for maybe the N-word I never saw anyone use it though.

I agree with Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, "worth every penny."

avatar

big_montana

Kind of a misleading headline, as Sprint has $2.5 billion in cash reserves, will be in the black in 1 years time because of the iPhone. So, the $15 billion payout plus the $7 billion expense to upgrade their network (which was going to be done iPhone or no iPhone, as it was drastically needed) is worth the commitment considering the added revenues that the iPhone will bring to Sprint over the next 4 years.

avatar

Scatter

If Sprint had 2.5 billion in cash reserves it means that they were already profitable.  Also, that 2.5 billion has now been spent.  Sprint will now have to earn back 2.5 billion back in profits in additional to what they were already making before the Apple deal can be considered worthwile to them.

avatar

big_montana

Read their quarterly reports, they curerntly have as of today, $2.5 billion in cash reserves. Their losses have been dropping, and if they keep at the pace they have been on for the past year, they will see a $1 billion profit at this time next year.

Agree. Makes it look like they're in worse shape than they really are. They're going to be hurting for a bit, certainly, but at the same time, it does put them in competition with AT&T and Verizon which keep gouging their customers. Hell, that's why I bailed on AT&T. It was honestly cheaper for me to eat the loss on buying out the rest of my contract and walking than it was to stick with their crappy service.

My switch from iPhone to Android went great. I'm not going to sit here and bash Apple. Plain and simple.... the iPhone was a pretty little plastic toy. The Andoid I got, turned out to be more like a damned mini-computer the way I use it. A good comparison? iPhone is like the Duplo style Legos, and the Android has been like having the grown-up ones that I can do all sorts of crazy sh*t with!

Edit: Looking at what I replied with.... Ok. Let me clarify. iPhone is still win for Sprint as the Apple Gollums of the world will forever chase their precious to the exclusion of anything else. Sprint, to me, has superior service at reasonable rates. AT&T is definitely in the habit of ticking off it's customers (my second go-around with them and again, not thrilled. Getting a signal sucked BOTH times.)
