SpongeBob + MMORPG = Cash Cow
As far as kid cartoons go, SpongeBob SquarePants easily ranks as one of the better ones, and at times is even a bit hilarious. But would we want to control the bright yellow fry cook in a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG)? Irrelevant, because whether we want to or not, SpongeBob is heading online.
That's the word from MTV Networks Asia and online games company GigaMedia, two entities working together to jointly publish the first SpongeBob MMOG.
"Partnering with GigaMedia on the development of a SpongeBob SquarePants MMOG allows us to bring the residents of Bikini Bottom into a whole new world -- one that is tremendously popular in Asia and presents unlimited creative and business opportunities for the franchise," said Jihee Nam, Vice President of Digital for MTV Networks Asia. "SpongeBob SquarePants is Nickelodeon's best known property within Asia and we're extremely proud to oversee the development of the MMOG with local business partners. We look forward to working hand in hand with GigaMedia on bringing SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Gary and Sandy Cheeks to life in an entirely new and incredibly popular online world."
If aimed at adults, something like this could end up being full of win, but for obvious reasons, kids are going to be the target audience. MTV says the game will follow a free-to-play model with an online store where gamers can spend their allowance on a range of items. The MMOG will also feature a bunch of video and simple Flash-based games, but other than that, MTV doesn't plan to reveal much else until we inch closer to the 2011 launch.

I really wish MTV and VH1 would just stick to what they know. What I mean is that I have been wanting to watch some music videos and every time multiple times per day I turn on the music TV channels such as MTV and VH1 they have some dumb show going on and it's not just one episode of that dumb show but a non stop show after show craziness that's going on with absolutely no music videos. WTF. I want to see music videos not watch fucking TV. I want MUSIC VIDEOS, preferably heavy metal ones. MTV I don't give a shit about Sponge Bob. Just fucking play music videos all day like you used to. I grew up watching music videos on MTV and that other one that came out much later and wasn't as good but at least they played music videos as well, VH1. Damn this pisses me off.
MTV is putting Sponge bob on the fucking internet instead of showing fucking music videos. I want fucking music videos. I want to see the music videos for metallicas latest Death Magnetic album but I can't because MTV is too much into shows like fucking Jack Ass. Now Beavis and Butthead were ok because they had music videos in them. damn I just want to see one fucking music video and you can't even get that. What the fuck happened MTV?
This is like the future from that movie Demolition Man where all restaurants are Taco Bell. MTV is into so many things they have forgotten their roots. Now my children have to grow up not knowing what a fucking music video is. And that just pisses me off. Just as much as that boring as cable show Sex in the city making it to the big screen. I mean who the hell goes to the theaters to watch sex in the city and there are now two fucking movies. damn that pisses me off. That's another thing that pisses me off. HBO is a premium movie channel that has a bunch of boring daily shows that fill in the schedule. Does anyone actually ever fucking watch any of those shows? Do people that watch those shows for entertainment live in institutions? You better believe it. I can go on and on. Like cartoon network with non cartoon shows.

We'll wait and see if it's going to be in 2-D or 3-D. If it's in 2-D I won't waste my time.

I mean, I get that the cartoon and all its affiliated merchendise, events, ect... has been a huge success and absolutely a cash cow, but an MMO? I just don't see that people old enough to play and really enjoy an MMO would be into one based on Spongebob Squarepants.
