Spiderman, Evil Dead Director Helming World of Warcraft Movie
Posted 07/22/09 at 03:24:24 AM by Nathan Grayson

The number of decent videogame movies can scarcely be counted on two hands (and even then, it only works if you count Metal Gear Solid 4 as a movie), but World of Warcraft’s cinematic debut is looking to turn that trend around. First, the film snagged The Dark Knight’s producer, and now Spiderman director Sam Raimi is lending his significant skills in the field of not being Uwe Boll to the project.
“Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life,” said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard.
“From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We’re looking forward to working with him to achieve that here.”
In addition to the Spiderman films, Raimi has also directed “Evil Dead” and the recent “Drag Me to Hell,” among others. Honestly though, while we’re sure Raimi‘s got something special planned for the WoW movie, we’d love to see Blizzard’s cinematic team branch its talent tree into the realm of movie magic. If WoW looked as mind-blowing as they make it out to be, well, even the four people who aren’t currently addicted to Blizzard's potent substance might give it a shot.
Warcraft Movie

I thought Blizzard was making a movie based in the Warcraft universe?? Since when did this become a WoW movie instead of a warcraft movie?
I kind of thought Half Life
Submitted by Muerte on Wed, 07/22/2009 - 11:16am
I kind of thought Half Life would have generated a movie by now. Its got the best storyline of any game I've played. Warcraft isn't bad but I doubt they will do it justice. I mean are they going to start at the beginning or start at WC2 or three?
Doom would have made a great movie if they would have even come close to sticking with the story but alas people who write screenplays don't think game developers are good story tellers. Kind of how novellists look at screen play writers.
They should have shot Doom

They should have shot Doom in first person so we wouldn't have to watch the Rock and his fevered ego try to act. Also, getting James Cameron to direct, Aliens style would have been good. Here's a thought, who's the worst sci-fi actor? The Rock, Vin Diesel, Jean-Claude Van Damme, or Hayden Christiansen? Some one should put the four of them in a department store window and see how long it takes people to realize that they're not mannequins.
I agree that Doom was

I agree that Doom was definitely done wrong. IMO it should have been more Aliens style, where Earth loses contact with the Mars station, the Marines are sent in and terror ensues. We're left with the lone hero, and away we go. A sequel would probably work better then, along the lines of Doom 2. Marine makes his way back home to Earth and receives orders to land near the new source and destroy it. To fill it in more they could show the evacuations and armed forces in full conflict with the demons.
As for Warcraft they almost can't start at the beginning. A deeper story of Warcraft doesn't really start until after War 1. Warcraft 2 is where it started to fill in with some depth.

A documentary a la

A documentary a la "King of Kong" has a better chance at working than a "Video Game Movie". Games aren't books Hollywood, don't treat them as such.

Darns... Sorry, I assumed the drama kings were the bad guys... well I guess if they want a crappy movie made, they have the right to do so. Just don't expect me to watch it.

What were the "decent"
Submitted by CapitalistPig on Wed, 07/22/2009 - 5:01am
What were the "decent" videogame movies? Let's see, there's Doom...nope. Super Mario Bros...uh uh. Street Fighter...hell no. I can go on and on. The sad fact is that the two mediums should remain seperate. Seriously, how many crappy movies have spawned even crappier games? WoW has plenty of potential. Unfortunately Hollywood usually screws it up by substituting CG eye candy for any kind of meaningful plot development or character depth.
Your reasoning is flawed.

Your reasoning here is flawed. While I agree that there aren't really any good video game movies, its not because a good video game movie can't be made. All video game movies in the past have been low budget pieces of crap with no name directors and C list actors. The games themselves had no real back story to begin with, only a weak plot to get the action started. The movies turn out to be much the same. They arent about an epic story, they are about making big bucks with very little money. It is very apparent that blizzard has no interest in making "another video game movie" Just look at the names they are putting behind this. I'm sorry but a video game movie has just as big of a chance of being great in this day and age as does a movie about a comic book superhero. There are plenty of shitty super hero movies out there, but we don't say "You can't make a good super hero movie" because for every 3 pieces of crap out there, there is a dark knight, or x-men. Blizzard said in a press release that they will not make a movie if it will not get good reviews. They will not do anything thats going to hurt their game membership, and I think they have proven that they mean business. Now given, you can have A list actors and big name writers and still end up with a gigli on your hands, but chances are good that this movie is going to be awsome, and when that first trailer rolls all you haters are going to be right on the bandwagon much the way all the tolkien fans said a movie would never do his books justice.
There is actually a plot in

There is actually a plot in WoW? Just seems like the point is to level up get cool armor and mounts and go on raids.
It all basically rolls off
Submitted by AntiHero on Wed, 07/22/2009 - 10:31am
It all basically rolls off the warcraft RTS series. Make a WoW character and watch the cinematic. The storyline in the original release of WoW (level 60 cap) i don't even think had much lore, but the war between the horde and alliance (i can be wrong). Burning Crusade however was about the burning leagion ruled by Illidan (who was defeated by Athas in Warcraft 3, and banished to the outlands where he made his army to strike again). The Lich King expansion is all about stopping PRince Arthas who became completely ruled by evil motives after picking up the "Frostmourne" and slaying his father in Lordaeron (where the undead home city is in WoW, this is all result of Warcraft 3) WoW continues the story, but in a different, less "here's the story, gameplay is unimportant" instead of commanding an army, you're part of the army basically.
I don't like Microsoft, I associate with it.
Im sorry Spiderman was

Im sorry Spiderman was terrible, I always liked spiderman but he made it too corny...he had better step up his game a lot if he expects to win over hardcore WoW fans.

Generally the thought of a movie based on a game makes me cringe. But the world of warcraft is more than just a game. The franchise has spawned all kinds of material, including novels. There is alot of lore here to build a movie on. Knowing that makes me interested enough to go see a warcraft based movie. But hearing that it is going to be helmed by raimi with the backing of the dark knights producer makes me giddy. This is going to be huge. It sounds like no expense will be spared. If they can come up with a good script this is going to be an awsome movie. I only hope they dont fall short in that department, because thats what kills so many video game movies. Luckily they have alot more to work with than most video game franchises.
content
Submitted by stige on Wed, 07/22/2009 - 1:06am
i hope this movie is entertaining too, but if depth of content "makes the movie" then i think the Warhammer universe from Games Workshop would hold the crown of best-game-to-movie franchise.
Mr. Rami - the little voice in my head wants to see a NE druid drop a feralbomb on the Horde. all of it. Please?
hehe
Submitted by mesiah on Wed, 07/22/2009 - 3:06am
We all know content alone doesn't make the movie, Or dungeons and dragons movies wouldn't suck so much :D hehe. While warhammer has alot of history, I think warcraft was a good choice because it has managed to make it beyond the realm of hard core mmo players. World of warcraft has become one of the most widely recognized game franchises today, aside from classics like mario and sonic. Its the youtube of the MMO world :D It may not be the best but alot of people have tried it and most people know about it.
