It's said there's more than one way to skin a cat, which is pretty gross when taken at face value. But the point remains, and it applies to Sony's approach to glasses-free 3D on notebooks. Rather than bake a parallax barrier panel into its Vaio line, the electronics maker has developed a lenticular sheet that transforms standard notebooks into 3D laptops.
The sheet was specifically built for the Vaio VPCSE1Z9E (S series), according to Tech-On. That particular model uses a 15.5-inch LCD screen and has a webcam, both of which are essential to the lenticular sheet. Sony's 3D sheet is about the same size as the Vaio's LCD screen, measures 3mm thick, and applies over the top of the Vaio's display. It then uses the notebook's built in webcam and special software to detect the viewer's face to present 3D images from various angles.
According to Tech-On, the 3D sheet can detect a face from 30cm (just under a foot) to 1m (3.28 feet), and at an angle of 60-120 degrees. Sony says it plans to launch its 3D sheet in October in Europe for 129 euro (about $184). No word on when or if it will ship stateside.
