Sony: Your Bravia HDTV Could Ignite in Flames
Sony's having a rough week (or year, depending on how you look at it). Having just suspended 93,000 hacked accounts and dealing with security issues all over again, Sony's Vice President of Television is making Bravia HDTV owners aware of a potential problem in which a particular component in certain models could overheat and even ignite inside their TV sets. Not cool (literally and figuratively).
The issue affects certain 40-inch Bravia LCD HDTV models, including:
- KDL-40V3000
- KDL-40VL130
- KDL-40W3000
- KDL-40WL135
- KSL-40XBR4
- KDL-40XBR5
Sony says if you notice any abnormal behavior from your TV (things like unusual noise, smell, or smoking), you should turn it off immediately, yank the cord, and stop using it. The company said it "confirmed that the symptoms do not occur when power is off," so we can effectively rule out black magic as the cause.
According to BusinessWeek, Sony has recalled 1.6 million Bravia TV sets since 2007. The issue stems from a faulty component in the backlight system. If you own one of the affected models, you can visit www.updatemytv.com to schedule a free evaluation.
