Sony Unwittingly Retweets PlayStation 3 Jailbreak Code
Oh Sony, how silly can you be? The PlayStation 3 maker has been stirring up quite the stink over the online publishing of PS3 jailbreak code that allows unsigned software to run. In its attempt to put the genie back in the bottle, Sony's been threatening to sue anyone who posts links to the code, but that's only the beginning. Did you watch the YouTube video made by PS3 hacker George Hotz, or even just comment on it? If so, Sony wants to know. In an ironic twist, Sony should considering suing itself.
You know Kevin Butler, the fictional Director of Rumor Confirmation, VP of First Person Shooter Relations, and other made-up positions at Sony? Well, Sony also created a Twitter account for its marketing figure, and whoever's in charge of it made the mistake of retweeting the very jailbreak code Sony has been trying so hard to erase from the Internet, Engadget reports.
The tweet was originally sent to Kevin Butler by Travis La Marr (@exiva). @TheKevinButler responded by saying, "Lemme guess... you sank my Battleship?," and proceeded to retweet the code. Oops! It didn't take long for news of the blunder to spread and for the message to be removed. But does this mean we'll have to add "Defendant" to Kevin Butler's list of positions?

Whenever I read about companies like Sony engaging in this insanely aggressive clampdown on piracy breaks I wonder if they are seeing the big picture.
In analyzing this situation from a business standpoint I wonder if they have taken into account and quantified the cost of these aggressive actions. The backlash and negative press and attitude towards your company this is generating is no doubt a loss to your company and your backend in the long run.
On the other hand, you could simply embrace it and hire George Hotz for your company to learn from. And restore linux functionality. Hell, you could have a homebrew competition. You would be a trailblazer in the community and no doubt would reap the praise of a surprised press and fanbase.
While doing this you could quietly introduce the serial key feature and make your security roughly the same to valve's steam service.

It's mind boggling. It's like Sony hasn't been paying attention to anything. Ever.

Haha. That's about as funny as the video Microsoft submitted as evidence in court regarding IE and even the judge said "wtf the title bar changed, what kind of idiot do you think I am?"

Someone's been watching too much Dexter, haven't they?
Kevin Butler is the VP of Awesome PlayStation Goodies, not Kyle Butler, the alter ego of Dexter Morgan in HBO's hit series.
Although if Kevin Butler doubled as an insanely awesome serial killer, that'd be cool too.
