I am a firm believer in what I buy being mine to customize to my liking.

I take my firearms to gunsmiths I flash different roms on my android phone these are both my devices.

I do have to say that when it comes to consoles Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo. all of them must exert some control over these machines because what you, I do to these machines has the potential to effect the playing experience online of others. this mod allowed the user load various types of software on his ps3, he may not have been loading hacks for say COD, but that is a possible use in the future. that would impact others play experience and possibly impact the profitability of producing games for it I am sorry I don't like playing with cheaters and if they ran rampant on a game I would be that more hesitant to buy it.

as well. did this mod allow the play of pirated games? that would also reduce the profitability of these machines.

these are two things that currently consoles have a leg up on the pc gaming crew and is important in making the games as well as the consoles profitable thus an appetizing platform for developers. remember especially at first. console makes generally take a hit selling their consoles, hoping to make it back on games.

I just don't think sueing your customer base is a good bussiness model.

And how much MONEY is SONY making doing all this? Suing to prevent something has to be the most nebulous way of generating revenue I have ever heard of. Cheap knockoffs by a company is one thing but rampant and widespread and easy piracy? THAT'S a guarantee way of wasting millions of dollard for absolutely no gain.

So if I go an buy a ps3 tomorrow and then I load custom firmware on it....thats illegal?

Or is it illegal to just make it?  Or illegal to share it?

This is so confusing, ha!

What if I buy a used ps3 from a person, am I not allowed to do it?

Geohot may have a possible out in some of this--based in part on Sony itself.  If his PS3 was no longer in warranty, no longer enjoyed any kind of coverage or protection of any kind--he could reasonably argue that he in fact has a right to alter, modify, or break components that Sony itself no longer believes to be certifiably operational (per the warranty).

It may be a bit of a stretch, but it opens the door to companies from over-reaching protection.  How can they claim they need to protect something they would otherwise refuse to accept for return, repair, or cover for any reason?  They have abandoned their hardware coverage--they cannot suddenly do an about-face and say it is still theirs to own in perpituity without offering some kind of warranty compensation.

like distronic, i also grew up having the impression sony had the best products. from tv's, cassette, cd players. but as with many of us here, i grew up & noticed that sony's qualith has gone south but their prices went up.

i think the quality of sony products before were top notch. nowadays, i think with a new management with all the cost cutting bull crap, sony is just another name among the choices of consumer goods.

no longer the company revered for quality products. sorry sony, i have decided to purchase an xbox instead of ps3. after reading this article, i'm happy i chose xbox over ps3.

companies who keep exerting useless efford & money to go after modders are only shooting themselve in the foot.

companies who try to control their consumers really irritate me. that's why i don't like apple. we should all be given the freedom for upgrade or whatever the hell we would like to do with the things we bought.

Microsoft did the same thing with the xbox and won.

when?

Unless I'm missing something, it's not really the same.

They just banned users from X-Box Live.

avatar

Neufeldt2002

They were banned from xbox live for modding their machines to allow questionable content. Same as Sony threating to ban the PSN accounts for the same thing. Both companies are doing the same thing, brought a lawsuit against the original modder and then banned or threatened to ban user accounts.

The above link is for the MS trial.

Sorry but the Microsoft lawsuit is completely different. Geohot is being sued for tampering with his own device. The man in the Microsoft lawsuit is being sued for performing modifications on other peoples Xbox's for 60-80$. He was directly profiting from their modding, and that is why Microsoft is going after him. Sony is not suing for Geohot profiting from the modding. Microsoft is also not going after people who downloeded the information, nor are they seeking information on people who simply viewed sites regarding modding. Microsoft's lawsuit is a completely different case. Read the articles before trying to throw Microsoft in the same boat. Not that they are much better in general, but please know your facts first.

Sony does make some pretty good products. Too bad I will never buy one again. We as consumers have principles that supercede product-loyalty.

Good Luck Sony!  Open source will always prevail.  You are fighting and inevitiable uphill battle which cannot be won.   Suing your customers is not good business......

Just visited the website. Take it Sony.

You mean "Bring it!"  or "Take that!"  Do you not? ;)

Regardless, I did the same.  I am growing more and more annoyed with Sony's Byzantine stance on the electronic modding world today.  I do not own a PS3, but I admire the modding community and Sony should too.  Instead they attack at every turn and get egg on their own faces as a result of their own bumbling.  Some serious bumbling, I might add.

The emperor has no clothes and Sony should realize this.  The world is different now.  You cannot dictate to people what to do with the electronics they purchase.  By turning off features that an active enthusiast modder market wants and uses, you alienate your products and vilify yourselves.  It's a market segment worth keeping.  It does no harm to sales and in fact likely encourages more.

Embrace the modding community, Sony.  It will be the best PR move you could do right now.

As a longtime Sony consumer and despite the fact that I am not directly affected, this practice is driving me away from their products.

Here is GeoHot's site:

I just visited it and I look forward to getting a visit from Sony Clause.

I havent bought any Sony products for a while and that wont change anytime soon I see.

My dad bought a Sony plasma TV about 4-5yrs ago and then I convinced him to buy a PS3 for movie playing.. etc..

Well, his Sony TV refused to accept an HDMI signal from PS3. Yeah, go figure that one out, a Sony TV wont work with a PS3.

lets see here, a company that knowingly and secretly installed a rootkit via music CDs a few years ago wants access to people's IP addresses...

This connection alone should get it thrown out of court.

avatar

aldude505

Haha totally agree, this needs to stop now. Like was said earlier in this thread the best move Sony could do would be to support the modding community.

Btw what ever happened to those rootkits and DRM on CD's??? Oh yeah...

avatar

MattyMattMatt

We can only hope Sony loses this, anything less is a loss for the consumer, infringing on out freedoms.

avatar

Fuck Sony.

They can fall off the face of the earth for all I care.

All of us outside of CA should flood the GeoHot site just to contaminate the IP address list and screw Sony over.

I grew up loving Sony. I thought they were the greatest. My parents even owned a Sony 46" rear-projection TV. I wanted a Sony CD Walkman for my elementary-school graduation. I even liked the VAIO computers. Then I grew up. I saw that Sony's prices never did match their value, and I keep hearing how Sony is trying to control everyone that uses their products like a communist regime. Is Sony really made in Japan, or did China buy them out and are using the company as a testbed to launch their communist principles?

avatar

GreenTurtle

I know I won't buy Sony anymore, and neither will anyone I know. Word of mouth is the biggest advertising and like the previous poster mentioned, I being the biggest nerd in my circle of friends and family have a sway in tech purchases.

avatar

PERSHON

Sony is a ridgid pain-in-the-a** ridgid company.  Not only do they sell products for inflated prices, but they fail to catch on to the fact that being able to hack a product can bring increases in sales and loyalty from power users.  The very users whom influence friends choices of tech products.  They made a big mistake with the secret installation of their DRM on Sony CDs and here they go again.

FTA: Do you think Sony is doing itself more harm than good here?

If BP can poison a good part of the gulf and hijack the media... Yet folks still but their gas...

I would say, "No, Sony isn't doing more harm than good."  This will need to become an absolutely enormous, sebaceous, festering sore before it has any ill effects on Sony's bottom line.
