Sony Dubs Motion Controller "PlayStation Move"
Posted 03/11/10 at 08:02:56 AM by Paul Lilly
What happens if you take Nintendo's Wii remote and nunchuck and paint them black, streamline the controllers, and cut the tail? You get Sony's PlayStation Move motion controller and sub-controller.
Instead of a sensor bar, the PlayStation Move platform relies on the PlayStation Eye camera to help "deliver an innovative and highly immersive experience." The camera purports to detect precise movement, angle, and even how far away the player is from the console.
As for the motion controller itself, it includes a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as a color-changing field sensor that the camera uses to track movement. According to Sony, this combination allows for both fast and subtle motion.
Kotaku has put together a handy list outlining the differences between the PlayStation Move and Nintendo's Wii remote (see here), including fewer buttons, "a smarter controller," and no wire between the motion- and sub-controller.
Sony says it will launch the new controllers worldwide this fall, but didn't offer up any pricing info.

Everything looks awesome

Everything looks awesome except for that blue ball thingy. Makes it look like a toy. But anyhow, that's really cool, it'd be a "Wii" and PS3 in one box. There'd be nothing left for the Wii once this rolls out. I'd always wanted a PS3, so then might be the right time.
The Wii would still have

The Wii would still have Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Wii Sports and every other franchise that you can only get with a Nintendo box. Sony would have a splintered market for this device. You can port the games to the Xbox platform, and only folks who have this device could play our games. So then your left with who develops games for this thing, and will the games be worth playing.
It's great that Sony wants to add function to it's system, but IMO Sony has done nothing this console generation but send mixed messenger and numerous recanted statements about what gaming on the PS3 is suppose to be. Pretty much putting the Wii mote on a copy machine shows that Sony is unsure of what it's customers and fans actually want.
Less Xerox, more Borg. IF

Less Xerox, more Borg. IF you read the article the PS3 remote is a far more capable device, as if they assimilated the technologically distinctiveness of the Wii and added it to their own....
Has anyone found Nano probes in their PS3 Remote?

I agree that it's more

I agree that it's more advanced in it's use, but they failed to move the controls forward at all. It's still a remote with a wireless nunchuck. There are more buttons, but the interface is the same.
For example, you could buy a $20 mouse, or the $80 gaming grade mouse. The $80 dollar mouse is no doubt better, but you still interface with your computer the same way. Sliding the mouse on it's pad to move a courser.
I'll add that I did read the article, and many more on the device since it was introduced last year.

A tactical what at the end of what? It looks like a sphere to me. I just hope it don't cost to much, I just spent $40 on a Turbo Fire Controller by Datel for my PS3, and now this.

Playing catch up
Submitted by k11k on Thu, 03/11/2010 - 10:36am
Well that shows you what a big differenece Wii is doing in the console market. I remeber sony blasting the wii cause it didn't have all the power like the PS3 and nobody was going to care for motion control games. Years later and both MS and Sony are playing catch up, cause in the real world alot of console gamer don't care for graphic as they do on PC, they just want a fun game to play.
I wouldn't say Microsoft
Submitted by Peanut Fox on Thu, 03/11/2010 - 12:45pm
I wouldn't say Microsoft is playing catchup as Natal is vary different from Nintendo's and Sony's approach to motion control. Granted, I don't think either company saw the Nintendo revolution being a threat.
Fact today one of the most misspelled words for young children is we. Spelled Wii.

I hate the orb at the end but after reading the article I understand its purpose.
Truthfully, something like this is long overdue. I quickly became tired of the Wii with its inferior hardware, graphics, game lineup and inaccuracy of the Wii remote itself. Many others who own a Wii have said the same thing, but mostly comment on its outdated graphics.
I love Nintendo but they really put out a cheap gimmick this time which only has a nitch with multiplayer/party games and a handful of classics.

Submitted by Caboose on Thu, 03/11/2010 - 10:23am
Thats what the PS EyeToy uses to track your blue balls, so it can translate it in to an onscreen action. Kinda like the Wiimite's IR reciever and the IR Transmit sensor bar (did you know you can use the Wiimote using 2 candles as the IR source instead of the sensor bar. Doesn't work as well, but it does work)

But if they could implement it nicely, it'll give me some more time with my PS3 which has gathered dust!

What a rip off.
But anywho... What do we have here... A WII Controller but built to be used on the far more graphically powerful PS3 even though the video that shows this controller in action is using a game that looks like it would run great on a wii.
