Sony Cuts Price of PSP Go with Little Fanfare

Sony's PSP Go might be the red-headed stepchild of handheld consoles. The reason we say that is because Sony just permanently slashed $50 off the price of the PSP Go, which now carries an MSRP of $150, but the console maker did so without making a peep. No fanfare, no ballyhooing, not even a curt press release. That's in stark contrast to Sony championing a new lower price for the regular PSP console just one week ago, news of which was announced on Sony's official PlayStation blog and various marketing materials.

Balloons and streamers or not, a visit to the PSP Go's product page confirms the price drop, though Sony should let its retail partners know of the new MSRP. A quick peek around the web shows that, at the time of this writing, popular retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, ToysRUs, and Walmart all still have the PSP Go listed at $199, or thereabouts.

In any event, retailers will catch up in time, and the new price is certainly much more attractive than the original $249 MSRP that first accompanied the PSP Go. We also think the price cut is a necessary one if Sony wants to attract buyers that might otherwise be waiting for the PSP 2 or Nintendo's 3DS console, the latter of which will debut at $250 on March 27.
