Sony Cautiously Considers Developing a Tablet
According to a Bloomberg report, Sony is thinking about making a tablet to go up against Apple's iPad, but wants more proof that consumers would buy such a device.
"We have been taking a deep look at developing a tablet for a number of years, not just because of Apple but because it creates some interesting opportunities," Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony's Information Technology Products units, said in an interview with Bloomberg.
Abary said his company needs to see more proof of consumer demand before forging ahead, though he didn't say what it would take to convince Sony to make the leap. In just over a month since its release, Apple has sold over 1 million iPads, and with the recent international launch, we wouldn't be surprised if that number doubled before long.
"The iPad has created a new opportunity," Abary said. "Now we can get a good judgment as to whether the market is truly accepting of it. [Sony is] not convinced there is a large enough market to justify bringing out a tablet."
