Sniper and Spy Drops No Longer Just Random, Achievements Work Too

Hate TF2’s new random drop item system? Hate TF2’s old achievement-based system a smidge less? Well then, this news should… make you smile? A little? Come on. Ah, there it is.
As with other classes, the Spy and Sniper can now acquire new items from more than just the rotting wheels of fortune that are their enemies’ perforated corpses. Yep, achievements are back, but random drops are here to stay as well. Now you just have options. Lucky you!
One key difference between these unlocks and the others, though: Spy and Sniper gear comes at 5, 11, and 17 achievements, whereas other classes’ come at 11, 17, and 22. Spy, Sniper, and hassle – one of these things is not like the other.
Grab the new patch by logging into Steam.

WOOT!! Yay for achievement milestone unlocks! Boo for random drops!
I really do hate the new drop system (no control, no reward, no effort) so I am very glad to hear that the milestones are back. Although I'm a little disappointed by the lower numbers. Maybe 8, 14, 20 or 7, 13, 19 would be better compromises (although I would prefer they kept 11, 17, 22).
I mean really, I unlocked 7 Sniper achievements in only two rounds of Egypt. (Last weekend.)
But yeah like I said, I'm glad the milestones are back. I'm just fine with having both systems at the same time as long as I get my milestone unlocks. :3

As glad as I am to not have to idle to unlock weapons anymore, we still have the problem of duplicates. It's actually beginning to become difficult to select one of the original weapons through the masses of duplicates, especially for the Sniper and Spy, who each have two unlockables under the same category (secondary and special respectively). For an example, I have 3 Razorbacks and 2 or 3 Jarates, which is a pain to scroll through just to find my SMG. My inventory will undoubtedly be full before the trade system is released at this rate.
Personally, I think the majority of the achievements are easy, so I'm surprised Valve insists on keeping random drops for the casual players. You certainly don't need to be a hardcore TF2 player who plays competitively in a clan to unlock the majority of the achievements. I've earned all the Sniper and Spy milestone achievements--and thus the unlocks--through normal play already, and the update just came out. I hope Valve drops their pride and admits defeat in this one.

The duplicates are there because Valve will be putting in a trading system in a few days. Of course, by then everyone will already have everything...

I'm aware of the trading system; I mentioned it in my post. However, according to the blog, Valve's goal is to implement it (along with other features, such as influencing random drops) before the next class update, which is obviously not going to be within a few days. By then, not only will everyone have everything but the hats, but their inventories will be full of useless duplicates that no one wants. The only things likely to be traded are hats. That leaves the duplicates as nothing more than a hindrance to any player who's been playing for a few weeks, as duplicates will only be deleted as they accumulate due to their being worthless.

You can still delete them right now, and when the trading comes into play, believe it or not, there will be people still looking for Sandviches and Kritzkriegs and Backburners...

I'm quite aware they can be deleted. It's simply pointless to continue having the drops in the first place. And, as I explained earlier, practically anyone can unlock the weapons through achievements rather easily. It doesn't take very long.
