Sneaky Businesses Sticking with IE6 to Block Facebook
If a business wants to block Facebook, it's common for them to work with IT to design an elaborate, and ultimately flawed, scheme to do so. But according to Microsoft's Stuart Strathdee, many businesses are just continuing to run the now ancient Internet Explorer 6. As it turns out, most of the slick new social networking sites don't render properly in IE6; they sometimes don't work at all.
This way a company doesn't have to actively talk to employees about acceptable usage, or develop security tactics. "For a lot of our customers that's just a comfortable consequence of staying on IE6," said Strathdee. This looks like a bit of speed bump in Microsoft's efforts to get everyone on IE8. Strathdee points to the much improved security features of newer version of the web browser as reason enough for companies to switch.
Does your place of business still use IE6? If so, do you think they're doing it out of laziness, or is there a more devious purpose?

Ive been using http://bit.ly/bJwmma . It uses a better method than blocking social media sites because it only monitors sites like Facebook in working hours. People/Employees still have the option to use it for a breather or during breaks so its really unnecessary to block it. Sometimes they use it for work too in helping reach decisions.

This software program http://www.timedoctor.com/1 uses a better method than blocking Facebook because it just monitors Facebook during work hours. Team members can use it during lunch breaks. Also some people might need to Facebook for their work so it's silly to block it.

That is such a huge fucking load of shit if I've ever heard it! You do not need Facebook for your work. Don't try to play off your Facebook addiction as a necessity!

I think this is a great article. I found an interesting white-paper created by the Palo Alto Networks and it sounds like they have a solution to this problem. Here's the link at the bottom:

Being in the Navy onboard an aircraft carrier, we still use IE6. However, Facebook seems to work fine. It keeps the Sailors happy while we're deployed. Can't do much else with it, plus Flash doesn't work, nor Java, so a lot of websites are limited to us in what we can do. Bandwidth sucks so maybe its a good thing that we can't do much...

Its a sad state when companies have to rely on flawed software to keep its employees from wasting time. I am sure numerous employees waste time at facebook and others. But shouldnt the employee's manager be managing the employee's productivity. Should the productivity not be acceptable, find another employee.
This county seems have become more acceptable of sub par performance, from food at resteraunts to employees making widgets and cars.
Update the IE stop spreading worms/virus
do your job.

I was doing some volunteer work at some non-profit when I noticed their workstations were still running IE6. I installed IE8, and this was in November. I come back in March, and IE8 was still there. So, at least the lazy businesses allow you to update it.

You probably seen those XP PRO terminals locked at 1024x768 for a 1280x1024 screen, with no way to change it...
It has a start menu that doesn't let you do anything but open office, a web browser, and mabye shut down. It may or may not have SP2, but no OS patches that came thereafter. The belief is if nothing can be installed and no configuration can change, it doesn't matter how "insecure" the browser is, just so long as it works.
You can have your recession. I'm not participating.

Chrome is the way to go. If you think IE 6 is slow, try firing up Fire Fox with 3 add-ons that continuously need 'updates'. Only then shall you know true slowness.

Only reason I won't switch to Chrome is lack of security. I need NoScript, as well as a master password for my saved passwords. In Chrome, you just go to options and every password is just lying there naked.
I could live without the master password if the NoScript devs ever make a Chrome extension, but not sure if that is possible with the Chrome SDK.

You do understand Chrome and Opera (chrome being #1) are the most secure browsers in the market right? If you think FF is you've seriously lost your mind, go find it, it's a proven and documented fact, and also proven and documented is how insecure FF has been and still is.

Someone should kill IE6. Just beat it with a blunt object and make die a painful death.

I'm with you on this one. IE7 should also die.
There is no reason for anyone to not update to the latest version of what ever internet browser they are using.

There just is no excuse for running IE6 or 7 at this stage of the game. Its actually pathetic.
