Skype Goes Down Again, Should Microsoft Start Sweating?
Microsoft may want to go over its purchase agreement with Skype and see if there's anything in there about the VoIP service being sold "as-is." For the second time in as many weeks, there's a bug in Skype's system that's preventing users from around the globe from signing in. Skype says it has a handle on the problem and that not a ton of people are affected, though we ran into the issue ourselves earlier this morning.
"A configuration problem has meant that some of you have been disconnected from Skype," Skype's Peter Parkes wrote on the company's blog. "We've identified the cause of the problem, and have begun to address it. If you've been affected, you should start to see improvement in the next hour or so. You shouldn't need to manually sign back in to Skype -- it should reconnect automatically when it's able to do so."
In our case, the problem was a little more severe than that with Skype not only disconnecting, but crashing altogether. We've since been able to sign back into Skype, though not everyone is able to just yet.
"We are continuing to address today's problems, and are seeing indications that the situation is improving," Skype's latest official update reads.
As with the previous outage, this one can't be blamed on Microsoft, which inked a deal to purchase Skype for $8.5 billion in cash last month. While the deal is in place, there's still red tape to wade through before the service switches hands.
