Welcome to the New MaximumPC.com!
Posted 06/25/08 at 02:05:00 PM by Will Smith
First off, if you're seeing this, welcome to the new Maximum PC website! Now that you're over here, be sure to give Norm's Guided Tour a look-see and check out all the cool stuff we've added to the site. I couldn't be more excited about both the new design changes we've added, as well as the staff we've brought on to keep content flowing to the new site on a daily basis. We've got a few familiar faces in our blogger corps, as well as a bunch of new folks, so please feel free to drop into everyone's threads and say hello to anyone you don't know already.
Now, for housekeeping. It's entirely possible that some of you will have problems logging in due to the migration. Virtually everyone will have to clear your old cookies for all *.maximumpc.com URLs. You'll need to do that on all of your machines and all of your browsers. Sorry for the hassle, but the old cookies will almost certainly interfere with the new site. The good news is that clearing your cookies should solve most people's problems. If it doesn't, please shoot me an email, and I'll manually make the changes necessary to get your account working. It may take a day or two to work through the queue, so please be patient. My email is comments at maximumpc dot com.
If you have any comments, suggestions, problems, issues, or complaints, but you can log in, please post them in the comments for this thread (you can click on the little number next to comments down below to get to the comments interface). We'll be on call for the next several days, keeping a close eye on this thread for all of your feedback and comments and we want to know what you think! And as always, thanks for reading Maximum PC.
Great Job People

Just got the new mag the other day and read Will's editorial (which I always like very much).
So I popped in to see what is all about. Nice what I see so far. And by the way, the newest issue of the mag is the best I've seen in a long time. Killer article after killer article!
Will your doing a great job of surrounding yourself with very good people. You are all doing a fantastic job!
Long live No BS Max PC!
Best of the Best

It has a pretty good feel to it. My main question at this time relates to Best of the Best. Where is the most critical componant of any system? Why has there never been and still does not seem to be a power supply? Keep up the good work!
Couple things
Submitted by Trkkr on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 2:23pm
First off I'd like to mention the new site looks great..and I'm viewing it on my home PC through a slow RDP connection. I thought browsing the new site would be slow as molasses but it's not that bad.
Couple things that I've noticed though.
1. I was hoping with the new site that there would be news page navigation at the top as well as the bottom of the page. If you're at the top of the main news page and you want to go to the next one, you still need to scroll to the bottom and click 'Next' or the preferred page button.
2. It may be coming but looking through the Best of the Best section there are a few categories that you've reviewed in the past that have not been added, the one of which I've been waiting for, USB thumbdrives/keys.
Other than that, great update. You're also pumping out news stories almost faster than I can read them! Nice!
UPDATE: Reading through the comments on the 'Guided Tour' I agree with one of them completely; I hope it is good ridance of the extremely annoying ads that would come up while navigating around the site. Showing the site to my fellow IT co-workers they were scoffing a bit at the amount of ads that kept popping up while checking hardware reviews.

We omitted any categories that we didn't feel we'd covered well enough lately to make a recommendation in. Tom's working on a thumbdrive roundup which should give us enough info to make a recommendation in this category again shortly. You can expect more categories to come in in the not too distant future too.
I'm not a fan of the ads that display between pages either, but they're an unfortunate necessity. We have configured them to be minimally annoying though on the new site. They're supposed to only pop up once per session, so if you see them more than once on each visit, please shoot me an email with the details of your browser/OS setup. We use a cookie to control this, so if you've blocked maximumpc.com cookies, then you'll see it between every page.
Congrats on new site-nice!

I like the new site. The increased content is welcomed. I hope it will stimulate interest in your magazine and increase your number of subscribers. I view a 24" monitor at 1440 X 900 (sorry-bad eyes) and have a considerable amount of wasted space on both sides of your content. You might want to set it up for a more "Maximum PC" audience of higher resolution--hopefully no one is viewing with a 15" CRT monitor at 640 X 480 or 800 x 600!
Rob Malda's 10 Commandments of Web user interface design
Submitted by Lars Rasmussen on Thu, 06/26/2008 - 3:07pm
See commandment #1: "Thou shalt not needlessly subdivide pages with little or no content into tiny little nuggets of data requiring the reader to click a dozen times to get only a few hundred words of data per page. You can get away with it, maybe, if you have many huge graphics, but 1,000 words fit just fine on a single Web page."
The orange & red seem a bit overpowering.
I like the 'My Comments' feature.
Keep up the process of refinement!
The subdividing thing is
Submitted by willsmith on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 9:46am
The subdividing thing is tricky. Sometimes you have to break a page at an unnatural short spot so that the rest of the pages in the story flow well. We're still working on the rules for that, but we'll try to get some more content in when we have to make one unusually short by moving a sidebar around or something.
If you don't like turning pages, just click that Print button at the top or bottom of any page. That takes you to a print preview that puts the entire article on one page and removes a lot of graphics from the rest of the site.
Love the new layout, now I

Great update to the site. My only gripe, though not big, is that I might burn out my scroll-wheel. Everything looks great, but very spread out vertically (to go through 1 page of "news" takes a lot of scrolling with less items per scroll than used to be).
Again, overall looks great and "Best of the Best" is back (although I can't find "MaximumPC" or "Best of the Best" on the Best of the Best page ;)

I like, I like! now to do some browsing. I did have trouble logging in after I cleared cookies / cache, but that could be because I'm at work. Love the new color scheme. Is there anyway for users to customize this page, for example, what if I want a blue color scheme?
I LOVE the fact that we can now see all our comments in one spot.
Keep up the good work

Compared to the $5 million my company paid for their new site, yours looks better, runs faster, and is easier to navigate.
Congrats, and thanks for continuing to kick ass MPC!

Sensory Overload: Part Deux
Submitted by Talcum X on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 9:54am
As I look about, I'm finding new stuff in the mix with old stuff. This is whats confusing me. I figured if I go back to the last story I read ( minus the news of the upgrade) Everthing behind that would be old stuff I already read. Not so. I go back as far as the last podcast and I'm finding stories I have never seen. So, in short, I dont know how far back I need to go. I dont know if they are just inserts from the mag or what.
I am very glad that Best of the Best is back.
And if you cant read it, My avitar says ORACLE Sucks! Kind of got squed as it forces it to be square and not in proportion.

Thanks for the feedback. You're seeing a lot of new articles because we've been beta testing with our bloggers for the past week, populating our news pages. From now on, though, every new article will be bumped onto the front page.
WOW.

Submitted by Shalbatana on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 8:50am
I had forgotten about the upgrade when I first clicked to check on the day's news stories. What a shock.
Woah! emerged....that says it all.
First, really beautiful.
Not slow for me at all.
Takes a minute to realize that the news on the front page is repeated in the sub-pages. I like it though.
Best of the best is still not definitive, and is missing many categories you often have covered. No MP3/Mp4 players for instance.
Thank the heavens for no more error message when clicking "more news" and getting the advert.
Congrats to all! Fine job well done.
One word of caution... please try to avoid posting articles here before we get a chance to read the same article in the mag (like the recent hardware hacks - it was posted days before I got the mag at my house). It devalues the mag itself.
There's no time like the future.
Thanks for the kind words

Thanks for the kind words :)
We're going to be adding more to Best of the Best over the coming days. Some categories were pulled because we weren't really sure what was definitive, and wanted to do more testing, or because we haven't reviewed a product recently that we thought was really compelling.
As a general rule, we'll post content from the mag on the day that newsstands are supposed to start selling the issues. That's usually about 2 weeks after most subscribers get their issues. That's what many other publications (including other Future pubs, and titles like Wired do as well). With the print version, you get a lot of convenience, and a lot earlier access to the majority of content than other people. We cheated a little on a few features for today, so we had a ton of content on day 1, but we'll stick to the street date in the future.
Liking it!

Some of us actually spent time going through the site rather then posting the comment first :-)
Btw, I like the color contrast. My over all rating: "Kick Ass"
P.S. Finding it a bit slow though.
