How many places that provide abortions actually use the word "Abortion" in their name?  Not very many -- they are dotor offices and such.  I was pretty amazed when this story aired on NPR, but several good points such as the one above were mentioned.  This is not necessarily a polical statement about pro-life or pro-choice -- it is a limitation of the software.  If I look for Ice Cream, a lot of shops are going to have "Ice Cream" in the title of the shop and my choices will be listed.  Will Kroger or IGA appear on the list?  A Gas station that sells Ice cream?   Likely not.  Any program can only respond to the information put into it.  We know what we want, we just have to input it into the program in a manner that can the program can interpret it properly.  I don't think Apple or any other like device is trying to make a veiled political statement, they are doing the best with what limited information we have provided.

Quite frankly im TIRED of hearing about abortion rights from the same shit heads who wont protest the TSA and dont mind being spied on 25/7. The people who scream the loudest about abortion rights are always the same people who want to take your freedome and liberty away because of how scary the muslims are. Liberty is kind of an all or nothing deal. The abortion issue is FAKE just like all the rest of this shit.

avatar

btdog

If this was reversed and abortion activists was called "pro-killing" - I wonder if Lilly would have remembered the quotes? Hmmm...

avatar

philipa25

Why is everyone missing the obvious answer?  This is done because Apple hasn't invented the abortion yet.  The iAbort, coming to stores near you in 2012.

avatar

winmaster

Of course, for the iAbort to work, you must be plugged into iTunes during the entire process and afterward you must recover with iDrugs.

Really LAUGHING OUT LOUD. That was a good humor post.

avatar

bpstone

I heard a muttering as I came closer then to hear them utter, "The death of common sense."

avatar

I wish Siri could find a way to abort about 33% of the comments on Maximum PC. I'd stand in line for a 4S for a whole week.

Where was Nancy Keenan's mention of men's reproductive-health service in her correspondence to Apple?  There probably was none since the misandrist that she is denies men having any reproductive rights.  It serves Keenan well that Apple did not cater to her wishes regarding clinics that cater to a woman's right to choose when men are not afforded the same.

Within two years male birth control pills, implants, patches and creams will become available to men, whether women like it or not.  This will bring men one step closer towards having equal reproductive rights which is a basic human right.

U.S. District Courts will continue to address lawsuits filed on behalf of men so that they be granted the equal protection of civil rights laws which safeguard the right of women to make family planning decisions after sex. At a time of reproductive freedom for women, fatherhood must be more than a matter of DNA: A man must choose to be a father in the same way that a woman chooses to be a mother.

Until men have equal choices, women should not either.  Siri got it right.

avatar

Carlidan

What? Who is deny men's reproductive rights? Sorry to burst your bubble, it is the right of a woman if she wants the baby or not. She is taking the risk of that "parasite" in her body. Men don't. So if she wants to abort it, she has that right. I sick of tired of the B.S debate. Woman are the one are taking all the risk when having a baby. It's their life on their line. Until men can have babies, we have no fucking choice to their decesion. Now if they baby was born, then we men have right. Until the baby is out of the womb. You don't have a choice to what she wants to do with that parasite. :)

P.S. I used parasite just to piss off some people. :P

P.S. because your a fuck head

What is a fuck head? Head that fucks? Just wondering.

Someone is getting a little testy.

Keenan doesnt make a profit from mens reproductive issues, therefor its not on her radar.

As many have pointed out below, this is an apple product, and therefore this a walled garden situation.  While it's true that apple DOES have the right to selectively choose which information to present to users within it's applications, It's also important to note that censorship of any kind is wrong in a fundamental way.  The moral of this story is "Don't rely on anything apple to give you a complete or unbiased view of anything ever, especially if it's controversial".

In the long run, it will be essential to our freedoms (as consumers, as americans (most of us here), and as human beings (all of us)) to eventually develop open, transparent processes to ensure the complete, accurate and proper indexing, searching, and availability of the web universally.  It's important that no individual entity, be in company, nation, agency, or even ISP be able to hold you captive to what they think you should see or do.  As seen in recent times, Ejypt was able to effectively cut their landmass off of the world network.  Such injustices shouldn't be possible.  Recently, branches of the US courts have felt they have the authority to sieze domains with no due process or just cause.  Another injustice that shouldn't be possible.  Recently, google was ordered to censor search results at the whim of a private company.  What is the root of all these problems?  One entity (Country, agency, and company) has TOO MUCH power.  Ejypt shouldn't be able to pull the plugs on internet connectivity.  the US courts should require proper review and oversight before ordering an effective domain seizure (and the company responsible for executing it shouldn't be beholden to the US judges whims, either!).  Google shouldn't have the ABILITY, CAPABILITY of censoring search results.  Censorship of any kind can ONLY EVER go WRONG.

Well said

Yes, the abortion issue is FESTERING with the scent of fascism. The supreme court didnt rule that Siri had to give them directions to the GD clinic. When people try and hold private corporations like Apple responsible for their rights you know its got nothing to do with rights at all. Its about the money no one should be fooled otherwise.

avatar

Wonko33

Another pro or anti something group get's their agenda some news time with a feigned response to a perceived affront by popular media attention grabbing venue..... yawn.

avatar

titan8813

Interesting that Siri gave the user another choice to an abortion clinic, and the president of NARAL calls the other choice "anti-choice".  Sounds pretty anti-choice to me.

Also, Paul, if something "should have been in quotes" then... edit the article.  You have no problem deleting comments correcting your typing mistakes after fixing them on the article.

avatar

Paul_Lilly

It was edited, at the same time I typed the reply.

avatar

Atomike

This is good news - it's nice to see somebody standing up for what's right.

BTW Paul,  - the phrase "anti-choice" is not jounalism - it's radical, over-the-top bias. And anti-intellecual. No valid media organizations use this term, since it's not accurate in the least - anti-choice could mean about a million other things. So, just thought I'd point out a Jouralism 101 tip. Kinda embarassing - may want to fix that blunder.

avatar

Paul_Lilly

The term "anti-choice" should have been in quotes, as it was in body when quoting Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL. I hope you'll excuse me if I opt not to wear a Scarlett A to represent my shameful blunder (it would clash with my Pac-Man attire).

I realize there are people who are against abortion and those for abortion; however, in my opinion, a company has to be non-partisan to either side of an issue. Apples job is merely to provide a service for people, not to dictate what it feels is in the best interest of its consumers private lives.

avatar

triclops41

lol, the abortion lovers and haters sure love to find every angle with which to get hot and bothered.

avatar

Neufeldt2002

Ultimately Siri is an Apple product, and as the late Jobs has already shown (no porn apps, etc), that means that if you use an Apple product you have to accept that you are using it the way they intended, with their beliefs in place with no exception.

avatar

Wingzero_x

Well perhaps one day you'll get yourself a girlfriend and the lack of porn apps won't be such a deal breaker for you.

Seriously though no respectable company is going to openly support porn like that. The only reason why there are porn apps on Android is because it's developed under the GPL, and open source. Therefor anybody can come along a do as they please, and Google can not say anything about it.

avatar

Carlidan

So once you get a girlfriend, you'll stop watching porn? :P

Please, I think married people probably watch more than single guys. They miss tapping as many asses they can.

avatar

Carlidan

" with their beliefs in place with no exception."

That is so apple! :P

avatar

szore

Abortion = legalized murder. Period.

avatar

theplustwo

Whether or not you think it's murder, it is legal. You might not think R-Rated movies are acceptable, but does that mean Apple should just pretend to not know what you're talking about if you ask for showtimes for one?

I can see how Apple might have the word "abortion" on a blacklist so that it doesn't pop up when you ask Siri something else that might sound similar ("Where is the nearest distortion picnic?" I don't know), but I wonder if it would give you directions if you ask for Planned Parenthood or a Family Planning Center or another name for it.

1. Authors post controversial content on a tech. website.

2. People start responding in mass, but not about tech.

3. ????

4. Profit

avatar

sallystudios

It's also murder everytime you masturbate as well. All those wasted sperm had the potential to be a person too

avatar

Nimrod

god your a fucking idiot. NO, they DO NOT have the potential to be a person you stupid fuck. A fertilized egg does. Are you retarded? Is a Sperm a fertilized egg? Did you mother fucking PASS the 7th grade? That "argument" is sooo fucking stupid it demonstrates  the moron level of intelligence were dealing with when talking about this issue. People are so mind controlled they say stupid shit like that that violate the most basic laws of nature. Holy crap.

avatar

aarcane

Then every egg that goes unfertilized is also murder, because you've denied it the chance at life as surely as if you've put a bag over a babies head.

avatar

Nimrod

I guess your not familiar with the concept to two genetic doners creating an offspring either. Why dont you crake a 5th grade biology book before making a statement like that.

avatar

Carlidan

Hey nimrod since you're all about life. What about killing animals? Is that murder? They have a mommy and daddy too. Or is it because they don't have a "soul" so they don't count. Just curious.

avatar

Nimrod

No, your not just curious, your just a dumb shit. Im quite familiar with this idiot line false reasoning.

First of all your essentially admitting that abortion is murder. The far extreme side of the pro-choice movement and the people who push it the most from behind the scenes acknowledge that abortion is murder but reason that its ok because the child hasnt been "socialized." They argue that parents aught to be ale to kill their children up to an age of 2 years old. I guess you fall in with that school of thought.

I do think that murder is murder and i dont believe that killing an animal without a good reason is ok. I my self am mostly a vegan but i dont have problem with people eating meat, i just hope that they do it wisely. Moreover, im not so stupid as you that i fall into the moronic debate about some one or some thing having a soul or not. Your question is quite unsophisticated and shows a clear lack of nuance on your part. But fuck you for trying any way. Thanks a lot.

avatar

Carlidan

Where do I admit that abortion is murder? Please reference to where I have said that. PLEASE!

What the fuck are you talking about with your anology. Really. That's so far fetched, it's so hard to reply. Where do I condone murdering a living person?

But what do I expect, they are Nimrodism, I shouldn't expect to make sense of them. Just read them and laugh as to the only way you can debate is with insults.:)

avatar

ABouman

And so is capital punishment.

It may be best - in this case - to focus on the tech side of this issue instead of getting into any pro/anti arguments.  We're not going to solve that debate here, and the point of the story is the algorithms involved in the search.

For example, if you searched for "Fast Food" and Siri only brought up McDonalds and not Wendy's or Jack in the Box or Carl's Jr. that would also be an issue, no?

avatar

Nimrod

it would be an "issue" but i guess you didnt get the memo that Apple products are a walled garden in the first place. They can and do do what ever they want in the first place. In the end its really not their responsability to get you any ware or tell you any thing. Its a service product, they will make their money either way at the end of the day.

avatar

Cregan89

Its 2011, grow up. You can define the word "murder" anyway you want, but it doesn't make a difference. We live in a world facing a massive overpopulation problem in the next millennium and babies should not be put into a world where they don't have parents with the means to properly care for them.

Granted, people shouldn't be so stupid and irresponsible to require an abortion in the first place, but there are plenty of situations where abortion is necessary and is the right thing to do. Should babies be born into the hands of drug addicts? Or somebody living off welfare? Did you know that a fetus' neural tubes are formed within the first 4 weeks of pregnancy, well before an unexpecting mother would even know she was pregnant? An unexpecting mother can cause serious defects to her baby if she was smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, or doing drugs at any point after conception. How about a mother who's body is not capable of giving birth and would result in the death of her and her baby? How about young teenage pregnancy, rape victims, mothers with hereditary diseases, or mothers who are sick and dying? Do you think they should have babies forced upon them? Do you think the babies deserve a life of suffering?

avatar

Nimrod

the entire population of the planet could fit in a single county. spare us your overpopulation bullshit. Ive got friends who were born to drug addicts. Who the fuck are you exactly to say they should have been killed. I can give you their name, you can sill try and kill them if you want, but one of them is an Army Ranger now and im quite so it would be who did the dieing.

i dated his sister and shes bitch. do what ever you want to her

avatar

Carlidan

We are overpopulated. You know there is limited resources in Earth. I know you believe GOD will replinish it. Just because you can put everyone in "one country" still doesn't tackle the problem that our resources are deminishing quickly as the population grows.

I miss Nimrodisms, they don't make sense, but it makes you laugh though. :)

avatar

Nimrod

holy piss your stupid. I didnt say they could fit in one country, i said they could fit in one county you stupid fuck. are you really that fucking retarded? You even put it in quotes you fucking dip shit

and yes its true. If you still feel the same way then why dont you get a head start by killing your self.

avatar

Carlidan

" I didnt say they could fit in one country, i said they could fit in one county you stupid fuck"

Wow a 6.8 billion or so can fit in one county. Wow that must be one huge county. I like Nimrodism's. They really don't make sense. Anywho Nimrodism always comes with insults with it You retard, stupid fuck, are you an iditot, anyhing else I miss. Think everyone will miss these treasured posts of nonsense remarks.

avatar

RandomInt

Hey, can you guys give Nimrod his own column?

avatar

Carlidan

They should. I love reading his comments. They don't make sense but it's good humor. :)

We should make a vote option. Call Nimrod's Top 10 most Humorous Remarks of The DAY! :)

avatar

aarcane

He never said they SHOULD be aborted, he said they're situations where abortion should be a viable option.

Look, Nimrod, Anyone who's sufficiently educated understands the importance of keeping abortion a viable option for those in need.  Most of us also agree that it shouldn't be a decision made lightly, and it CERTAINLY shouldn't be primary birth control.  Just because your friend came out well doesn't mean that most babies born to severely drug-addicted parents aren't at a severe disadvantage in some way, and that's only addressing the one circumstance you chose to isolate.

Furthermore, even if the entire world population could fit entirely in some of our larger countries, we'd be shoulder to shoulder with no land for food or merchandise production and no wildlife.

Finally, did you imply that murder is okay, as long as it ISN'T a fetus?

avatar

Nimrod

"there are plenty of situations where abortion is NECESSARY and is the right thing to do. Should babies be born into the hands of drug addicts?"

I stopped reading past your first line. Dont be such a rube, honestly.
