Seagate has started shipping the second generation of its Momentus XT, a solid state hybrid drive aimed at both consumer and commercial laptop applications, and the company's fastest driver ever for personal computers, Seagate says. Like the previous generation Momentus XT, this second gen drive moves frequently accessed data to a small chunk of solid state memory for faster access.
The original drive sported 500GB of main storage along with 4GB of SLC NAND flash memory and a SATA 3.0 interface. Now in its second generation, Seagate bumped up the storage capacity to 750GB, doubled the amount of solid state memory to 8GB, and injected a SATA 6Gbps interface. In other words, it's bigger, faster, and runs on a wider highway.
"Laptop users want faster access to all of their content, from gaming, music and video to spreadsheets and documents, creating strong demand for the highest performance," said Scott Horn, vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Seagate. "Seagate is excited to answer this need with a second-generation Momentus XT drive that delivers solid state drive speed, greater storage capacity and easy installation at an affordable price."
The "affordable price" Mr. Horn mentions is $245 MSRP, or about $0.33 per gigabyte. That's more expensive than a traditional hard drive, yet a good deal cheaper than a solid state drive. According to Seagate, the second gen Momentus XT is nearly 70 percent faster than the previous version and up to three times faster than a traditional hard drive.
