Seagate Preloads 500GB FreeAgent Go HDDs with Paramount Flicks
In what's being described as an "industry first," Seagate has partnered with Paramount to preload a selection of 500GB FreeAgent Go ultra-portable hard drives with Paramount movies.
“Seagate and Paramount Pictures are delivering major motion pictures to consumers in a unique and innovative solution. For years Seagate hard drives have been powering the devices that allow consumers to enjoy their digital libraries. Today, we are simplifying content delivery by giving consumers the ultimate flexibility in how they enjoy their movies all in a convenient package,” said Dave Mosley, executive vice president, Sales, Marketing and Product Line Management, Seagate.
Consumers who pick up a specially marked FreeAgent Go package will be able to activate Star Trek (2009) for free. These FreeAgent drives will also come preloaded with 20 other movies that can be unlocked through the online purchase of a license key. Some of the bigger name titles include Beowulf, GI Joe, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

If I have to pay to see/unlock the movie on the HDD, then what's the point? I'd rather go to Hollywood Video and buy a used actual hardcopy for maybe even cheaper. And if there are only 20 movies on it, then what is the probability that someone will want to purchase those titles considering the vast amount of titles in the market?

I agree, if I have to pay to unlock it, why not just let me pay to download it? A high quality rip will only take an hour or less to download, and it won't be taking up room on my drive that I obviously bought because I need more storage space...

Not to mention, you can easily turn that hard copy in to a DRM free copy that you can take with ouy wherever you want... without DRM

Maybe I'd care if the movies files weren't likely drenched in DRM that would defeat the purpose of carrying them around on an external hard drive - to play them on multiple computers and devices.

Now I must format the drives when I buy them before use? This bites.

And if you don't format it, I bet they wrapper application pops up everytime you plug it in and fools a bunch of consumers into thinking they "need" it to use the hard drive. I'm already tired of the autoload apps that come on portable storage device, but now they're making it even more memory intensive? Sheesh. How many average joe consumer's won't know they can delete them and end up with just a 400Gig drive? Honestly... this is nuts.
I'd rather have a frontal lobotomy than a bottle in front of me.
